Hi :D I am new to diabetes and low carbing .Should semi skimmed milk in a cup of tea make bg go up?I am also waiting for the results on my kidney function test but have found that carbs make my bg go up and am still in the experimenting phase to see what affects me so I am very lo carb at the moment.Would this be bad if my kidneys werent 100%?I am trying to learn as much as I can but have sent myself into info overload :? Hope I am not duplicating these questions that I should have found the answer for .

Semi-skimmed milk has a fraction more carbs than whole milk, but a glug in your tea shouldn't make any difference. Don't forget our BGs do go up and down a bit by themselves during the day, so I wouldn't worry unless it's gone up surprisingly high from your start-point.

It's best not to overdo the protein intake if you have kidney problems. Try to compensate for fewer carbs with more low-carb veg and 'good' fats, rather than excess protein, until you get your results back. Even if your results are fine, sit down with your GP and discuss how much protein you should eat for your kidneys, given you want to control your carb intake for you diabetes. If you don't get a satisfactory answer, ask if you can see someone who will know.

Atkins-style low carb doesn't cause kidney problems, but if you already have them then it's advisable to take advice from an HCP. I'd aim for a kidney specialist in your place.

Hope this helps
