I was diagnosed with type 2 seven years ago at the age of 60. My doctor has recently put me on Metformin as my attempt to control it with diet and exercise is now not enough. I have been reasonably fit most of my life and exercise for about an hour 6 days of the week. I have started to reduce this a bit as I read that excessive exercise can prompt the liver to produce more glucose. The doctor started me on one 500g per day dose, then 2nd week two 500g per day. The prescription now wants me to increase this to three per day but I am considering keeping it at two per day. I am now measuring my glucose 2 hrs after eating and, for example, yesterday after breakfast it was 7.6 after lunch 7.8 after supper 7.2.. Does it make sense to stay on two 500g or should I go onto 3??? I still intend to take my usual exercise working up to about 70/80% max heart rate for 40/50 mins.
I find that many foods affect me differently and my staple breakfast of porridge over the last few years is surprisingly giving me readings as high as 12 after 2 hours but this morning toast and peanut butter 2 hours later gave me 7.1. I think I am learning that I should take more readings to find the sort of food that is suitable for me.
