Hello all of you wonderful and inspiring people.
I’m 55 yr old male. Overweight at 107 kg. Admittedly my own fault for being that way. Poor lifestyle over past 4 or 5 years. Personal reasons caused me to really go off the rails food wise and not doing much exercise apart from work which can be at times quite physical. I work nights and have often had complete carb blowouts in the mornings. Bread, cereals and my worst habit is a brew with numerous chocolate biscuits. Not a big drinker just a few red wines on a Sunday. I work 6 nights so Sunday my relax night alcohol treat.
I recently had my yearly check up. Was contacted by GP and Practice Nurse within days of blood test. Fatty liver and a slight rise in Cholesterol and then I was told I was T2 diabetic on the 48 mm score. So only just hit the number. Nurse has given me 6 weeks before next blood test and said that if levels on that next test were 48 or above I would be confirmed T2.
I have for the past two weeks been following a low carb diet. Feel better and lost a few pounds. I also bought the Accu check instant and have been monitoring for past few days. I wonder if anyone can reassure me that these results are ok as the spike after eating isn’t that much.

Day 1 bought test
Random 5.9 to try it.
Evening b4 meal 5.9
2hr later dropped to 4.9 ????
1hr later 5.4.

Day2
B4 breakfast 6.1
+ 2 hrs. 7.7
Evening meal 5.4
+2hrs 5.4

Day 3 today 1/7/23
B4 breakfast 6.0
+2hrs. 6.4.

Sorry for the long intro post. I have read many threads and am determined to get through this for both myself and my concerned family.

Hi welcome to the forum, we’ll done on changing the way you eat, it’s not easy but looking at those numbers you are doing great :) I would be very happy with those numbers. The spikes are below 2 after 2 hrs which is what is advised to aim for, even better if they are less than 2

You’ve every chance of having a lower Hba1c on your next visit to the GP, even if your diagnosis isn’t T2 or pre diabetes try not to go back to your old ways and keep up the new way of eating, you’ve got the chance as you e caught it early, to be able to stave off a T2 diagnosis. Even if you do get a diagnosis it’s not the end of the world, let us know how you get on :)

Thank you lovinglife. I was not sure what to expect with the scores. I thought they may be too low +2hrs after food. I am determined to get my life back on track. The blood results and visit to Nurse was frightening and a kick up the backside. I know there will be ups and downs. Seems there is always someone on site willing to give support. Thank you.

Hi @Tonmoo1 and welcome to the forum.
You are doing great, don't worry about the lower numbers after a meal. because unless a Type 2 is on strong diabetes medication, they don't go dangerously low.

What probably happened on your Day 1 is:
5.9 before Evening meal (which is good)
You either had a low carbohydrate meal (or at least one low for you) with no real BG rise from the food;
or (much less likely) you had a meal quite high in refined carbs which spiked your BG very quickly so that your insulin was overcompensating by the 2hr mark and so the BG level was lower that before the meal.

In either case, your body detected the 4.9 level as low and so your liver reacted correctly in helping you out by pumping a bit more glucose into your Blood - fantastic, just what your body needed!

You're doing a whole lot of apologizing. First, because life just, you know, happened. Especially working night shifts can mess with your blood sugars. But over all, you know... Just stuff every normal human being goes through. So no need to kick yourself there. Then you're saying sorry for the long post. You are aware that the more information people have to go on, the better they can advise you, right? No such thing as being too lengthy here.

That said...

You are doing an amazing job, tackling this head-on and going for it. No worries about the "lows", they're not problematic and your body is doing exactly what it's supposed to. You're going to be back in the non-diabetic range in absolutely no time at all. So instead of a whole lot of sorry's, maybe just pat yourself on the back some, because you are absolutely rocking this! Your loved ones can and should be proud. I know I am, and I don't even know you. :)
Hugs,
Jo

Thanks Jo. I’m getting more and more aware of what to expect now. I had been on the low carbs for 10 days prior to getting the BG tester.
I really do feel better in myself and seem to have more energy. I have lost 7lb in not quite 2 weeks. Water maybe, but definitely less bloated.
And…..
I promise no more apologies on posts.

Problems with sugar disregulation, start way way before it shows in blood tests. What you were eating was only a problem because like all of us, your system was having problems handling the Glucose. That's why you gain weight, you cannot use the fuel properly, so your body has to store it away.
With the changes you've made, i would expect your next test to be below prediabetic level, so no diagnosis, BUT you clearly now have problems with carbs, so the new regime is for life, if you want to continue to avoid diabetes.
Well done, and keep up the good work.
