I am 70+ and have been pre diabetic for many years - usually well controlled with diet and exercise.
Recently having a health blip with my heart (AF mainly) and since taking medication for this early October my HbA1c has been increasing, 38, 44, 74, 88.....10 days ago my Gp started me on Gliclazide 80mg - today my first fasting Glucose test was 13.5 !
Can anyone throw any light on my situation...I don't have clue really...Thanks

If you are an ordinary type two and not eating carbohydrate in any amount then perhaps your insulin production is reducing - though we ca only conjeture.
What sort of things make up your daily diet?
It is deffo the medication but I can't change that if I want to keep my heart going.....the medication also makes me very nauseous so have been eating very little and have lost over a stone in a month....also taking steroids which increased my weight by 2 stone + in the first place but my usual diet is based on SW !

SW - Slimming World - I believe there are lots of 'healthy' carbohydrates allowed on that regime - what do you usually eat each day?
Almost nothing due to the nausea tbh…..My current standby are eggs and poached fish, and drinking loads of water. I am not really looking for diet advice...just some communication if anyone had experienced diabetes or increased glucose levels induced by medication and how it was managed....x

I was on 40mg steroids, now weaned down to 10mg for the foreseeable. My levels went through the roof and I was put on insulin.

I assume you are taking statins, these can also raise levels.

Thanks for your reply - I am not taking Statins (yet!)….hope insulin wont be my course of action either! It seems a downward spiral after 70 - it all seems to be happening at once !

It took me a lot of jumping up and down to get the right combination of insulin, and I didn't get the correct training. Having said that, the nurses were like deer caught in the headlights. They couldn't get their head around the fact that I wasn't taking the rapid insulin for food but to try and get the numbers down caused by the steroids. What was key for me was getting a Freestyle libre. I self funded for a while, then I got a prescription which lasts as long as I am on insulin.

Hi missmagwumps, it's annoying I know when people start giving 'diet advice' when you haven't specifically asked for it BUT many, many people have minimised their glucose levels even when it's medication that has raised them, by tackling a wide range of linked conditions by...….diet. I know it's not the answer to everything but diet is key & central to many health conditions. I wish I could give you some advice re your actual question but hopefully someone will be able to x

My sugars were ok for two years on Pred....they only increased when I started the heart medication - so something triggered it off! Bisoprolol, Digoxin, Apixaban - Amiodarone did the most damage so was taken off that.....made me so poorly! Am hoping they can fix this electrical fault with an Ablation but the waiting list is long.....
Well done for persevering with your insulin....x

No problems....I understand and know what you mean but most times I feel so poorly I couldn't be bothered to list what I eat currently even though it's virtually nothing. I will take a rain check on your advice later if I may? xx
