Hi all,
Im Mel and just joined this community. Thought it would give me more insight about my own health from others. I was diagnosed with diabetes 7 years ago after by chance, my urine was checked during a lab experiment at my college at the age of 21. I was advised to restrict diet with no medications presribed. Being new at that time, I wasn't so careful so in the next few months of the diagnosis, I was prescribed oral medication called diamicron and later, went on insulin with the oral medication too. I was on that for about 2 years and in 2006, I went to the UK for my study and registered with the NHS to continue with my diabetes monitoring. However, few months in the country, I was admitted to hospital to an unrelated health problems in which the doctors told me that I am diabetes Type 1 and the medications i was on were termed as `unconventional' treatment. So they prescribed me with only insulin, no oral medication. So far, it has been ups and downs for me as it demanded me more emotionally and physically too. Being away from the family in a foreign country proves hard to me and in 2008, I had DKA for the first time. After that, I was referred to psychiatry team due to my low self esteem or some sort. I haven't really accept diabetes in my life because of its demands that made me feel so small. I often asked myself....why me...My younger sister had diabetes when she was very young and I can now understand the stress she is in. Joining this will, as I want to think of it, give me more hope in coping with my diabetes and in better management of it as well.
Honestly, I don't like to do regular insulin injections but with a little push, I do it.
