I was backpacking around se Asia for 4 months and was gonna carry on travelling for another year but I got really ill and didn't know what was wrong with me so after a week in and out of a mountain hospital which no one spoke English and they ran zero tests on me just gave me glucose and saline drips and fed me choco pies.. Which made me worse so I made a ridiculous 30 hour trip home back to the UK and went straight to a+e and turns out I had DKA and the only symptom that I didn't get was passing out which was lucky! And my hb1?? Was 164 which apparently was ridiculously high.

Anyway.. I have been told to take 16 units of lantus every day which I take at 11am and before every meal take 4 units of nova rapid, if my blood sugar is over 13 take 6 units if over 18 take 8 units, so this morning I wake up my sugar levels are 11.6 so i thought I'd try carb counting instead of just injecting 4 units with breakfast I had a lot of carbs coz I was hungry, I had cheese and ham toastie and 14 coffee biscuits so there was 110g carbs in my breakfast, so I injected 8 units, now 2 hours later my blood sugar went up to 19.2 so what am I doing wrong here? Thanks!

Hi,hope you get well soon
First of all what's your ratio ? I didn't find the right ratio until now but when I asked they told me that anyone should start with 1:10 and then adjust it .
Second novo rapid finish after 4 Hours maybe you should just wait more to' get it down

I actually don't know what my ratio is yet I'm gonna meet the diabetic nurse in a weeks time so I'll ask her, what would you recommend doing if I test my sugar 2 and 4 hours after a meal and its still say 20 should I inject some insulin without food to bring it down? If so how many units?

Thank you for your help!

Hi. Can I be blunt and say you shouldn't eat a lot of carbs because you're hungry. You should have protein or fats such as cheese etc rather than carbs. Over time your desire for lots of carbs will fade.
