Hello,
My name is Tate. I'm 47 . I live in USA, in San Diego.I have diagnosed with diabetes type 2 over a year. I control it with Freestyle libre 3, diet and exercise. Recently I started oral medication ( because of stress). The glucose level is not where I wanted to be.
I am worry, and I wanted to read how others deal with their struggles . I have a dream to be in remission of DM type 2 one day.
Greetings to all :)

Hello, @Tatesin , and welcome.

Many of our members have managed to put their T2 into remission.

Do you want to tell us more about Your HbA1c, diet, exercise regime, and medication. We would be more able to target specific advice with that info.

Depending on what meds you have been prescribed you could benefit from a low carb diet, but must take care if your meds are likely to cause hypos.

Insuggest you have a read around the various subforums, and the info for new members at the end of my post, in the signature, then come back with any questions. Imam sure younwill get the support and advicevfrom members whomhave experienced similar.

Hello and welcome @Tatesin

I am so glad you have found the forum. For me it has been life changing. I found so much help here and I hope you find the same.

I also find that stress affects my levels. I have a reasonably stressful job and have other personal stresses. I do keep my levels in the range I am comfortable with for the most part but I agree that stress makes it harder.

I am pretty strict keto. I used to describe myself as very strict but have suffered a bit of carb creep. I'm still under 30 grams a day which is what works for me.

What sort of diet have you tried?

What sort of meds are you on?

Welcome

Hello Tate,

Ah, yes, stress... It does mess with our blood sugars more than we'd like, eh. If you tell us more about your situation, we might be able to make suggestions? Current diet (including drinks, not just foods), your HbA1c and whatnot... We seem like a nosy bunch, but the more we have to go on, the better we can usually help.

Since you asked, this is mainly how I dealt with my diabetes for the past 8-odd years: https://josekalsbeek.blogspot.com/2019/11/the-nutritional-thingy.html . As you've found, stress impacts things, and times have been stressful here for the past year and a half, which has impacted my blood glucose and my eating habits, yet still.... I managed to stay in the normal range, using diet. Not as low as I'd like to be, but still... Acceptable, and technically in the non-diabetic range. So I sincerely hope you'll be able to do the same as it turns out not to be impossible.

Hugs,
Jo

I believe I will learn a lot here. My HbA1c is 6.9, used to be 6.5. I do intermittent fasting, most of the time( usually skip dinner or I have my dinner earlier than 6:00pm). I do indoor biking 20-40 min 2-3 weekly. My meds are new, I started 2 weeks ago. I am pioglitazone and for hypertriglyceridemia (Atorvastatin).
I need to lose weight, I am down 10 lbs but I have more 20 lbs to go.

I am doing the intermittent fasting. I have my dinner before 6:00pm. I tried keto, but I couldn't keep for too long. I started my antidiabetic med(pioglitazone, I can't use metformin) 2 weeks ago. I have high triglycerides, so I am in atorvastatin, used to be gemfibrozil( but it interact with pioglitazone action)

Litterbugs war mongers hate mongers propagandists.
I'm sure there's more.
Nowt wrong with dreaming mate especially when it's an attainable dream.
I'm a none medication T2 kind of guy and I live on the edge of remission all the time.
If I were to put that extra effort in I could rid myself of this disease but I'm doing pretty good on the whole with my dietary approach.
I have great control compared with many.
Reading that back I feel pretty dumb.
After all my effort I'm happy to settle for almost there... that can't be right can it!
Watch this space...

I really liked your blog. I am going to save to use as reference. Thinking about the past, I've never liked soda or sweet things. But I loved bread, and I had white rice in most of meals and then the pandemic was another culprit. I gained 30 lbs. I am down 10 lbs.
I am working on to lose the other 20lbs ones.

Hi @Tatesin - I feel your pain- one of the things I miss is the crust of sourdough bread. I'll be honest and say I had a little bit of the crust last night. I really loved it but not feeling great today- I have an intolerance to gluten which becomes really bad when I don't have it for a while- then even a little makes me feel really unwell.

I miss sourdough bread.

Congrats on the 10 pounds! Keep in mind that statins can up blood sugars, so that's something to keep an eye on. Most T2's are prescribed them when they're diagnosed because it's just "the done thing" as a preventative measure, but some of us don't actually need them, and are pretty much fine when a low carb diet kicks in and cholesterol eventually comes down too because of it. (Those with a cardiac event in their past or familial high cholesterol don't seem to have much of a choice, though, and then, quite often, needs must.). But yeah, rice, bread etc would make quite the difference too, once left out. And the intermittent fasting you're doing is excellent. So all in all... The flying start is there, and now you have more to go on than you had before.

Diabetes is scary.... But once you know how it works, and that you've got some say in this condition's progression too, well... That potentially makes things quite a bit better.
Hugs,
Jo

I cannot tolerate sourdough either. It has low levels of gluten, some has no gluten, due to how it's made. Have you been tested for coeliac ?

Thanks, I am working to lose 20 lbs more. I don't have cardiovascular disease yet, but I have years of high triglycerides. It just reached too high and they put me in meds (over 400mg/dL). And still not normal.
I had to take atorvastatin, ( gemfibrozil and pioglitazone have bad interactions, I can't take metformin). It helps me sleep better and almost none night leg cramps.
I am going to the doctor next month. I will take my tests.
It is a new reality to adapt! Thank you for your time.

Yes, and I had a biopsy, but It was normal.GI doctor said to make the test in 10 years( it is in the paper, I couldn't believe why so long).
I make bread with almond flour and eggs, kind like pita bread. I still looking for recipes for my breakfast.

Coeliac can be problematic to diagnose. It took my daughter years before she got her diagnosis. She had symptoms when she was a toddler. She was gluten free for years, but then of course she had to consume gluten to take the gluten challenge. She was 16. She couldn't keep any of it down. Within minutes she was very sick. The few minutes the gluten was in her system, her immune response produced antibodies. I am also Coeliac. I can't even have a crumb of it. I also get two types of rashes. These manifest with hours.

None Coeliac Gluten Sensitivity is just as bad, just as unpleasant with IBS, GERD , stomach cramps and bloating, but it's not an autoimmune disorder, so no damage to the intestines.

I am sorry to hear about that. You probably have extra stress think about what to eat and what to cook.
It is hard already with diabetes.

Thanks @Tatesin, at first yes, but I have adapted as we all do. I actually eat pretty well and I feel so much better, including mentally too. See those delicious patisseries can be difficult , but there is always something to fill that craving lol.
