I live in Derby, Pretty rubbish control. I know no one in Derby with diabetes and would be great to have a chat! x

Also have a few questions:
>any recommendations for set meals for lunch?
>under 10g snacks?
>Facebook groups in the Midlands?
>Does coffee really effect bloods and creates barriers for insulin to work?...
>How to stop hunger cravings when getting bloods on track? Massive problem for me, hence the iffy control.

Hi and welcome. I tend to have a sandwich for lunch (not ideal) with cheese or ham etc. I use low-GI bread and thin slices. I also have apiece of fruit. Cheese or nuts are always good as a snack. I've not heard of coffee being problem? Hunger cravings tend to be caused by excessive carbs? Are you having enough protein and fats to balance a low-carb diet?

Hi "ONash" welcome.
Lunch - sandwiches - I used to have a triple decker (3 slices of bread) but have "cut back" to 2 slices of bread. Filling such as ham & humous and lettuce (when there is some in the fridge). Followed by some fruit, typically pear, plum, orange.
Not using any midlands facebook sites but a quick search (for Midlands Diabetes) threw up "Young Adults Diabetes Support Group West Midlands".
I think Coffee is negligible unless you are talking about a whole cafetiere of strong brewed coffee - then I have found it can raise BGs.
Low carb snacks - nuts ie Cashew, ham ?

Hope that helps

Thank you both! In regards to the low carb diet- I've eaten what i want, when I want for years, poor control- so when I do control my bloods I have hunger pains > just wanted tips to avoid over indulging and ending up with high bloods! (Quite the vicious circle). Liv x

Hiya. I'd really advise reconsidering the low carb diet, or at least cutting way way back on simple carbs. I have less than 40g of carb most days. I aim to eat snacks which have very little or nothing in them..I'd recommend dried strips of bacon (0 carbs), M&S smoked cheese slices (carbs), 80g tins of John West tuna infusions (very few carbs..the chilli n garlic nice); brazil nuts (very few carbs in a handful of these), 90% cocoa chocolate (7g carbs in half a bar).

Set meals...I don't do starters or deserts . I generally eat steak, pork, chicken or fish (unbattered) with broccoli and cauliflower, maybe mushrooms, samphire, spinach, asparagus, leafy salad. I do, if BS was low enough pre meal, sneak ice lollies in when no-one is looking...and I look away too)

Oh yeah..coffee is not a problem, but avoid sugar obviously and drink it black or with cream (one vice we are "allowed"). Good luck.

Hello and Welcome to the forum....I love a couple of mugs of coffee a day so hope can carry on enjoying...:P

Hi there, I'm also a forum newbie! I enjoy coffee and caffeine does raise my blood sugars. To find out by how much I waited 4hrs after eating or injecting (so that the test wasn't affected by digesting food or active bolus) had a cup of coffee and then tested one hour later. After a few tests I've found that normally a cup sends me up by about 1.5 mmol/l. My correction factor is 1u to 3.2 mmol/l so if I'm having coffee with breakfast then I just give myself an extra 0.5 units to offset the caffeine.

Hi ONash, Have you read 'Think Like A Pancreas' by Gary Scheiner? It's a must read for getting better control, only drink tea so can't comment on the coffee, but tea has no effect on mine.

Thank you-- interesting experiment to check if coffee effects bloods- will try this out.
Garr > I've never read that! Will give it a shot! Thanks
