Hello everyone:

I'm a 41-year old female and was diagnosed six months ago. Didn't know I had diabetes until I ended up in the hospital with ketoacidosis and blood glucose reading of 73!

My specialist (internal medicine) put me on Metformin (500 mg twice a day); Humalog (three times a day with meals, each dose ranging from 14-22 units); and Lantus (64 units daily at bedtime).

After a few weeks, my blood glucose numbers levelled out and I'm consistently within my blood glucose goal ranges (4-7 first thing in the morning and 5-10 after meals).

A couple of months ago, my family doctor increased my Metformin so that I can decrease my insulin. I'm now on Metformin (850 mg three times a day); Humalog (6 units with each meal); and Lantus (48 units at bedtime). I'm consistently within my blood glucose goal ranges.

My specialist indicated he wasn't sure if I was Type 1 or Type 2. He said after a few months, he would test me for antibodies to confirm. I am meeting with my specialist again later this month, so I will ask about getting this test done. Health professionals are treating me like I'm Type 2, so that's probably my diagnosis.

One troubling thing I have been dealing with is hair loss. Nobody can seem to tell what the cause is. I started shortly before I was diagnosed, so I suspect it's diabetes related. My family doctor noticed that my testosterone is low, so I have been getting low-dose shots for the last two months. Also using Rogaine in the barest areas, but the hair loss is all over my head.

Just wanted to say hello to everyone. Hoping to gain some knowledge and wisdom from you all. Feel free to comment or ask questions about my situation. :)

Hi and welcome to the forum.

There are a number of things that can cause hair loss in women with diabetes being one. Other factors can be thyroid and anaemia. There are probably even more factors. Might be worthwhile getting a few things checked out by your doctor.
