Hi everyone, i'm recently diagnosed type 2 last week. I also have an underactive thyroid and depression. I have joined this group hopefully to get some answers as I am totaly confused and whatever I try I still feel lousy. help anyone!!! please! :(

Hi Jms.
Welcome.

With all the different complications you have it is difficult to suggest anything really. My advice would be to go and see your GP ASAP and discuss this.

Ken.

Hi Ken, thanks for the reply.
I have been feeling really awful over the last few days, it's been scaring me I don't like this feeling.
I will go to the doctors after the bank holiday I can't cope with this.

I do know what you mean when you talk of depression. I have been there. What seems like a bottomless pit now can and will be surmounted. You just need to get the correct help. Have you friends or relations who can support you at this time ? We can offer you support if you need it, but you have to see the GP. Let us know how you get on.

Ken.

hya and welcome,
i know how you feel as ive an underactive thyroid and also used to suffer severe depression, anxiety, panic attacks and agorophobia to the point i darent leave the house for 3 yrs and ended up on a psychiatric ward so if i can be of any help plz just ask :D

Hi JMS
I am also a newbie and i know how you feel. I am 50yrs old, I have an underactive Thyroid, am on 150mcg a day Thyroxine and 75mg Aspirin a day for a blood clotting issue. Have just been diagnosed type 2 diabetes and am scared stiff. (have battled with depression for the last two yrs since my son died)

Do you have a good GP?, in the 2 weeks since I have been diagnosed I have been put on 40mg Simvastatin a day for Cholesterol and had a major MOT! Due to have a pneumonia jab, a special eye test and a foot check this week.

Will have flu jab in autumn and have been referred to the local DESMOND course and a dietician. I think I have been well looked after so far although the Simvastatin was not really explained to me.

Chin up, if I can be of any support let me know.

Chrissie

Hi Jms,
Welcome to the forum, I can understand your confusion! You must be very scared right now! We are all here to support you!
It would be best to talk to your gp about some of your problem's! I can understand about depression! i have been put onto pills for that!
You will need a blood testing monitor, The cheapest place is from Lloyds chemist!
You will need to watch what you eat cut out of items!
I know that right now you must feel very scared! we are all here for one reason we all have diabeties in one way or another!
Please ask lots of questions,
Sandy

I'm going to suggest that you get your doctor to be as proactive as possible with your thyroid. Many people need it adjusting quite carefully, and the results can be a major improvement. Diabetes and depression are both common effects of undertreated thyroid. "Treatment resistant" depression often responds to Thyroxine, and insulin resistance and weight gain can often be greatly improved. Many doctors are unwilling to do this, sometimes it may take a geographical move to an area where this is taken seriously.

I will echo what trinkwasser has said about the thyroid. It really is important to get it sorted as soon as possible. That alone will help your physical and mental health stabilise - then you will know how much work you actually have to do to get the diabetes sorted out without the uphill struggle the thyroid problem creates. If you start to look at your diet now you will hit the ground running when you have got the thyroid sorted! Welcome.

Oh thank you everyone for your comments and support it is greatly appreciated. Firstly my gp checked my thyroid function and said it was ok (on 150 thyroxine). A couple of months ago I was put on folic acid for aneamia, which then rectified itself. So I presume my symptoms are to do with depression and the diabetes (not being controlled, yet!!). I am on the NHS waiting list to see a counsellor as I have had a lot of problems with my two boys being ill this year also (which i couldn't cope with and which started my depression off again in the first place). My youngest now has to see a mental health specialist and they could not find a cause of his pains! I don't like to admit this but I have started self harming. Its ridiculous I know a woman of 43 self harming. But when things get really bad and i can't cope its the only way I feel I can cope

Hi Jms
I used to self harm myself up to the age of 18, It is the first step to admit that you do self harm! To be able to cope with it!
Sounds like you are very stressed and alone at the minute! You can always Pm anytime if you need to talk!
We are all here if you need to talk! There is always someone knocking around here!
Sandy

Thanks Sandy. Just living each day as it comes at the mo.
So fed up of not being able to sleep properly i'm exhausted just want to sleep for a week.

sorry you arent feeling too good,
it might be an idea to see if your local nhs has a mental health team u could be sent to, when i was very unwell mentally i found the help of a community psychiatric nurse very helpful, you really need to ask for referal to them and also a psychiatrist/psychologist,
please try not to self harm , try writing how u feel to keep your hands busy when u feel like this, plz go back to your gp as u need help now
hugs xxx

I don't know your particular variaty of self harming or what you, personally, get out of it, but there are things you can do to make things a bit easer on yourself. Here are a few self help techniques....

Get an elastic band (not so tight it cuts off circualtion tho...), put it on your wrist and ping it. It stings but does no permanant damage (so long as you follow the rule with it not being too tight).

Run an ice cube up your arm - simulates a knife.

Invest in a punchbag, you can get the inflatable ones very cheaply on eBay - cheaper than Argos including postage. Hit it. You could also punch cushions, but they don't fall over in such a satisfying manner.

Go to a fete that has a broken crockery stall, break some crockery! If you have any old terracotta pots, break them up for crocks! Rip up thick newspapers.

Do something physical - swim, gym, run, cycle.

Have a good scream. However, screaming can disturb the neighbours   so you need to be a bit choosy where you do it. In the film Cabaret she used a railway line with a train. There is a roundabout near where I live that is accessed by an underpass. It is busy 24/7, but very isolated - no one can hear you scream there.

Lots of poeple self harm in all sorts of ways :( For some it stays low level, for others it escalates. Find someone to talk to. Take a look at the Mental Health Foundation website and the MIND website. They both have good info for self harmers. If you feel desperate, call the Samaritans 08457 90 90 90, you don't have to be suicidal to call them.

Hi Jms
I know this may sound a bit weird, But i keep two diary's
1. Blue diary for good days and good feelings,
2.Black diary for the bad thoughts and bad days!
I know it may sound weird but it does help! I have finally managed to allow some of my feelings and pain out after many years of being so tied up inside! To be able to cope with everything that was going off in my life, i would push my feelings so low down and sit on them!
Shame is they bottle up! I feel for you! Have you talked your feelings over with your Gp as i am sure that they could refer you to see a counsellor or someone higher up!
Strange thing is when you are stressed and upset you tend to build up your feelings to such a point that there is one release! I found that by having my diary's i could let my feelings out and allow myself to finally breathe!
If i was you i would go and see Gp and say how you feel allow yourself to tell the gp how you feel!
You sound like you have so much stress and pain that you can't cope with! Allow it to release! Honest i found the diary's have helped so much also having the counsellor helps me alot!
Please Try and see Gp to recieve help! I know what you are going through and the pain! I also understand the release that you feel when you self harm! But there are other ways to be able to cope! If i can then you can!
Trust me i was at one stage a train wreck, i was so bad! Here i am now happy and go lucky and willing to give life a try!
Sandy
