Hi Sam and welcome :)

You've come to the right place for advice and information as the members on this forum are brilliant and it's my only place to gain knowledge and ask questions.

I'm not actually type 2 but heading that way  if I don't make drastic lifestyle changes. I have "impaired glucose tolerance" and got diagnosed as pre-diabetic in Dec 2014.

I know I need to lose weight (quite a lot) :( but I'm trying really hard and have adopted a low (ish) carb diet. I don't eat red meats i.e. beef or lamb but I do like my veggies so it's not so bad. But, it's hard trying to find low carb food which are also low in sugars too :arghh: - takes me ages reading food labels! I'm walking more too and walking up flights of stairs instead of getting in the lift and walking to/from work instead of hubby driving me in (so that's a 25 min walk each way)

It isn't easy but I'm trying things I've never eaten before. I bought some natural greek yoghurt 2 days ago and really didn't expect to like it but totally surprised myself. I ate a pot again this evening with 4 strawberries. My evening meal was turkey breast steak, cauliflower and broccoli and some wholemeal basmati rice.

You're heading down the right path - keep going :) even if you have a wobble or bad day! You'll gain encouragement, motivation and willpower just by logging on to here :D

I just wanna send u all flowers for being so sweet and welcoming. I adore meat just gonna find things to go with it really. Ive actually never tried sweet potato or butternut squash
.worth a go?

This weekend im actually not working so going to have a ruddy good read and make some notes i think to help me get my head around it.

Re metmorfin i may try taking it before or after and not during.. couldnt even keep the cockles in!! :( more concerned if i cant keep food in im not getting any.nutrients at all.. my calorie intake was very low today as it was x

Hi Sam,

Welcome! You will find this forum is the best thing you can do for yourself. I was diagnosed in September at 17.4, similar to you. My 3 month blood tests showed my levels at 6.7. Understandably the doctor was very pleased. The doctor and dietician use to give me such a hard time about low carbing, but when I got my test results the doctor was so happy he told me to do exactly what I was doing as it worked. The simple truth is if you don't live with T2 or in a pre-diabetic state you have no idea what works.

Like you I was on 1 tablet per day which was upped to 2 in a week. When I went to 2 I had bad diareha, but it did settle eventually. I take it before dinner. However, some people do have issues with it, so speak to your doctor. Umm be careful what you say about low carb as he will turn into the eat more carbs guru.

As for what I eat, here is a normal kinda day for me;

B a two egg omelette using the whole egg, with cheese and maybe ham or 3 rashers of bacon. Cup of tea or coffee with cream (I limit milk wherever possible and replace with cream). I make the omelette in the microwave - it take about 1 minute, but wisk the eggs first.
L Avocado with balsamic dressing and some smoked salmon, crab meat or prawns. Or some sort of meat (I eat ham, silverside, salami, turkey, kebab meat....what ever I feel like). Or if out at a mall maybe a kebab plate, on this I have a tiny bit of lettuce, tomato, tabouli, hummos and youghurt with what ever meat they have, beef, chicken or lamb or even a combo - I have never had anyone tell me they won't make me a kebab plate - that way not tempted by the wrap.
D I love meat, so here are some of what I might have steak (any size and type), chicken skewers- these are usually marinated in something, but the sauce has a minimal amount of sugar (lamb and beef versions too) oh and peanut sauce is fine particularly if you make it yourself; chicken mignon ie a chicken fillet wrapped in bacon and baked in the over.....oh I make garlic butter and put it on the top of this while it is baking, pork belly and of course loads of pork crackling; we love prawns and have been know to eat 500g at a time........actually you can eat any meet. I also make a mushroom gravy - I very finely dice onion add to frypan with a ton of butter and cook down and then add sliced mushrooms, once cooked I add cream, sooo delicious and a veggie.. For veg, truth is I don't eat a truck load of it, I like asparagus which I sometimes add to the mushroom sauce, also do this with spinach finely chopped. Occassionally eat some stir fry veg in lots of butter.
Dessert I have berries and cream. I also make a cheesecake thing - softened cream cheese, cream and diet lemon jelly, mix all liquids together and then set in fridge.....it is like a cheesecake top.
Snacks I eat almonds, cashews, cheese

I do eat other stuff, but this will give you an idea.

Excellent job. It is all trial and error. Make sure you get a monitor as soon as you can, that will really help you.

Well seems my stomach still isnt sorted as still needing the toilet too regular and not properly. . Really would have thought after 2 weeks of this dosage i would be settling down. Still doing low carb eating under 50g a day is this satisfactory if im doing the LCHF diet?
how high should i be aiming for fats please as wondering if im not getting this right.

Today i had a highlights hot choc just water and drop of milk. No carbs but does have about 2.4g sugars. Am i ok with this?

If it has 2.4 sugars it must contain at least 2.4g carbs. All you can do is test it out.

No-one can tell you how much fat to eat. You need to calculate this for yourself according to your personal needs and preferences. Going low carb means you lose a lot of calories. All or some of those calories need replacing with either extra fat or extra protein or both. If you need to lose weight, you don't need to replace all the calories, but just enough to keep you energetic and healthy.

For the first few weeks of taking Metformin at around 8.30 am and then having some brek straight after, I found I had to wait until around 10am before I could set off for my morning walk. The Metformin would kick in around 9ish and I was on the loo 3-4 times probably dumping more than I'd just eaten. When I say dumping it was more like weeing from the back (sorry for all the info) but it was the only way i could explain.
I'm happy to say now though that it is in the past and I haven't had the runs or belly ache for around 3 weeks now.
So just stick with it Sam.smiley thumb.jpg

Hi Sam - I used to have an "options" hot chocolate some evenings and they were 5gm carbs, I used to put a dash of cream in to give it body, then I saw a great idea on here, teaspoon of pure cocoa, powered sweetener (I use canderel) mix with boiling water then add cream- virtually carb free!!
As for metformin, yep, I had the same experience, after a week of feeling like a double decker bus had hit me my nurse practitioner put me on forxiga (a new drug) that combined with strict lchf and exercise has seen me get my hba1c from 61 to 53 in 6 weeks and then from 53 to 38 in 12 weeks, dramatic weight loss too- and after tomorrow I am stopping meds! Stay strong, seek help about the metformin.....keep posting and asking!

Be interesting to see what happens when you stop the meds with your hbA1c in 3 months. No point in before as hbA1c is a 3 month reading & anything less may be a false value.

Hi there.

I hear and feel your pain, and there is a a struggle ahead. Sorry to hear you're in shock about this and facing this. So am I, as are we all here. I recommend you use YouTube to look at Type II Diabetes Reversal AFTER you read the very latest proven scientific research on this, here:

More on this diet and diabetes reversal:

(news just as it broke)

And on this very site:

http://www.diabetes.co.uk/diet/newcastle-study-600-calorie-diet.html

Newcastle University LEADS the way on this VIA EVIDENCE-BASED PROVEN RESEARCH, and I am on a mission to reverse my diabetes and may well have already - as I've shed 22 pounds in 14 days on the Newcastle Diet and may have kickstarted my systems. I did this once before, lost 40 pounds in six weeks and then rebounded and binged my way back to diabetic for another two years...until now. This time I'm armed with thoughts of a life-long exit plan, my new lifestyle and diet - and mental mindset needed to combat the compulsion to overeat and eat junk food, as I have.

There are excellent compelling videos here:

Dated but still relevent:

His results are not consistent, and it's likely because people are ingesting too many carbs, but he paints a compelling story as to why this disease should be fought on a personal front:

An absolutely EXCELLENT VIDEO ON WHAT IS GOING ON WITH BLOOD SUGAR IN THE BLOOD AND CELLS and how to deal with it - and why:

A documentary a friend sent me, which I have yet to watch, but I look forward to watching it - beating Type II with raw foods:

FIGHT this by getting good and close to the truth and science about Diabetes and its effects, and by getting real about what diabetes means. In the first four years, on medication, you can face little to no damage to your body because of the medication, and then it gets worse. It's not a joke, and I believe strongly that the sooner people in society own up to this, as was shown by Katie Hopkins on TV (bless her bigoted soul - I say that sarcastically), the better. I'm on a 'wake up' plan.

Whatever works for you, I'm sure you'll find your way. DO expect your doctors to undersell the idea you can reverse this...because most people will not make the necessary sacrifices and mental/practical changes needed. But know that the science is in: IF you immediately shed weight and cut your diet to 2/3 of what you were eating before (or half if you were binging like a nut), forever...you'll get there. The Newcastle research shows that it's not about diet, only. It's about calories. Keep the calories down and exercise to ensure that blood sugar is mopped up from the blood stream into the cells. Lose fat immediately to clean out the fat in your pancreas and liver that are preventing insulin from working properly, etc.

That's my quick summary of what I've learned on this subject. Good luck and be strong. Find compelling reasons to regain your health - for me, a friend is dying of cancer she CAN'T cure. At least our disease, by and large, is curable except for a few people with a special resistance. This is a lifestyle disease. Kick the bad habits forever, and you won't have to second guess your eating forever, which was and is my main motivation for reversing this and keeping it reversed. Keep us posted!

Best wishes,

Meme
