Hi Guys and girls, well having been diagnosed just over a month or so ago perhaps nearer Christmas 17, I was put on Metformin then changed to slow release 750mg but now after reading all of the advise on here about diets and carbs, By watching my carb intake to about 50 g per day I have lost nearly a stone in weight started out Christmas at 16st-2lbs now weight has dropped to 15 st- 3 lbs as of this morning, problem is I now get slight pain in my kidney and feel light headed sometimes, I had a couple of episodes the other day where I almost passed out, one of my friends with T2 gave me a sweet and I felt better after.
I have an appointment with the quacks soon, but wondered if any of you guys have experienced the same at the beginning.
I am 71 I do not self test as the doctor advised against it?????
Help please

Your doctor is an idiot.. testing is how to tell the impact of what you eat has on your blood sugar levels. The vast majority of the folks here who have good control use a meter and eat according to the info it gives them. Without it you;re going the wrong way up the M1 with your eyes shut.
Have you been taking in some extra salt? You may find if you have switched from a processed food diet to a fresh food diet you might need to up your salt a bit.

Hi BulkBiker
I thought it was strange that the quack said that but I am old hairy ***** spark (and Biker) so what do I know??? I have to be careful of my salt intake as I have High blood pressure to, the only good thing is that my weight is coming off, might be able to get back into my leathers and buy another bike, (Only if she who must be obeyed says so)
But thanks I appreciate the response back so quick

It would be wise to speak again with your GP about your kidney pain with regards to Metformin.
As to your dizzy spells, if you have moderated your carbohydrate intake this may be the cause as the body requires time to adjust. If you have the same diet as before your diagnosis then, again, speak with your GP.

Get yourself a glucometer, it will be an eyeopener and an investment in your health. Good luck..

As you responded to having a sweet your blood sugar may have been lower than you’re used to. A false hypo. In other words not a true hypo just lower than your body has been accustomed to. But you do need to see the dr about your kidney pain. Get a meter then if it happens again you can find out.

Hi and welcome,

If you had been self testing when you felt light headed and dizzy, you would have seen at a glance whether you needed a sweet or not. Most likely not. Sweets are used to treat a hypo (low blood sugar) and it is highly unlikely this is what you had. On Metformin (or diet only) you are no more likely to experience a hypo than any healthy non-diabetic. Our livers take care of us when our glucose gets lower than our bodies like, and dumps some glucose in the blood stream to help us out. It could have been a false hypo, but without a meter you will never know. .

Do you have any sort of kidney problems? If so, Metformin isn't a good idea so you would need to speak to your GP if the pain persists. Meanwhile, I suggest you increase your fluid consumption. It is very important to drink plenty of water (tea and coffee count but plain water is better)

The other benefit of a meter is that it will guide you in your food choices. You can test before and after meals and see at a glance what that food has done to your levels and be able to tweak the meal accordingly.
