Hi, my name is Nigel

I have come here on recommendation of a friend who is a type 1. I am however a type 2 and controlled by medication. I have been diabetic for something like 15 years and never really thought of looking for any forums on the subject. My friend has been a great help and opened my eyes to many aspects of what I can do to make things better for me.

I do not know if my diabetes is being controlled efficiently or not and will give more details in the right sections.

My biggest problem by far is Will Power. Eating the wrong items, at the wrong time, in the wrong quantity, and because I wake up the next day (well, so far anyway), in my mind I am ok. I am kind of sweeping it under the carpet as if there is nothing wrong.

I will have various questions here and will look for hints and tips that might help

Cheers

Nigel

Hello Nigel and welcome from me. It may have taken you 15 years to come to terms with your diabetes, but it's never too late, so well done for joining us. Ask as many questions as you like.

Welcome to the forum Nigel. Plenty of motivation here if you need it. Do you self test blood sugars ?

WOW, 2 replies already. No, I dont self test, cant afford the strips.I have an Accucheck meter but the strips are a fortune. When I lived in London I used to get them on prescription but now I am in Scotland they tend not to use them too much here.

I am going to try and get a free supply of strips from the doctor in the next couple of weeks. Also will ask if I can go on to insulin instead of tablets. My friend tells me the advantages of insulin far outweigh the disadvantages.

I have an accu chek mobile meter. The strips are extortionate but I buy mine off Ebay for a quarter of the price and have no problems, although you have to read the description carefully to make sure they have a reasonable use by date.

The choice of having insulin is of course yours, although you will find most type 2's on this forum do all they can by diet and exercise to stay off meds.

Hi Nigel, welcome. You will get plenty of advice and encouragement on here, the willpower bit will have to start with you!

For meters, a popular one with many on here is the SD Codefree, strips around £7 for 50.

What are your BG levels?

I will post my BG levels on here by the weekend. Might be able to get them done today but dont have anything accurate as I have not been checking.

From the short time I have been on here it appears that many members have a signature with a lot of their details and I will do the same. Perhaps on here there is a section where I can fill in all of the details. Gimme a while and I will look around and fill out what details I do have.

I am an assistant admin on another forum, its a parrot forum and I like to keep looking in there incase anyone has posted. So therefore perhaps cant get on here as much as I would like.

Thanks everyone for the quick replies

Hello and a big welcome to the forum Nigel:)

Hi and welcome. You may find your GP reluctant to move you to insulin unless your tablets are failing and you are not overweight. Many T2 who are overweight at diagnosis will benefit from a low-carb diet and tablets and never need insulin. If you are reasonably slim and struggling with tablets and a low-carb diet then do discuss medication options as insulin may be relevant.

...Hi Nigel and welcome to the forum...like you I'm Type 2 for fifteen years, diet until two years ago, now SR metformin 500mg twice a day....unlike you I'd do anything to keep from going on insulin...joining this forum has convinced me low carbing is the way to go, not too sure about the high fat part of it yet, not sure why just instinctive for me, so more of a medium fat diet at the moment...:)

Hello Nigel, nice to meet you , looking forward to chatting to you here, you will get lots of support and make new friends ....Kat
