Hi Everyone
As you can see I'm new here. My name is Louisa I'm 44 years old, I'm married with 2 children a girl 13 and a boy of 7.
My diabetic journey started when I was pregnant with my daughter Erin. I had to go to the hospital for a scan as the doctors thought I had polycystic ovaries. As it turns out they found out I was 14 weeks pregnant, I had been doing everything I shouldn't have including, drinking, smoking, hot tubs, eating nuts pate and literally doing everything I wasn't supposed to, so as you can imagine I was a wreck. I had taken several home pregnancy tests and one at the doctors too, all were negative. I later found out my body doesn't produce enough of the hormone to produce a positive test result but the great thing was its also the same hormone that causes morning sickness too so I never had to suffer with that. A couple of days after having my bloods taken I got the call to say I had Gestational Diabetes, my mind was blown, literally within the space of about 5 days I had gone from thinking I couldn't have children to finding out I was not only 14 weeks pregnant but I also had this condition too. All I remember thinking is why me?
My whole pregnancy went well, I soon got used to injecting insulin and by the time I had my daughter they worked out I had actually lost weight. Although my belly was huge and they kept saying I was looking at a possible 10lb baby, imagine my surprise when my daughter was born and she was only 5lb 7oz.!!! It was all fluid. This caught us completely off guard as we had bought a whole wardrobe for her which wasn't going to fit her for ages. After having my daughter I was told I had Type 2 and to try and control it with diet. That was in 2009. In 2015 I fell pregnant with my son and again had to inject insulin but I didn't have a problem with that as I had controlled my diabetes so well with my first pregnancy, in fact I found it much easier to control my sugars using the insulin than just diet alone. Again huge belly but this time a 7lb boy.
After both pregnancies I was still controlling just by diet alone. In 2019 I was put on empagliflozin and then earlier this year I was put on Trulicity. So from 2009 to 2019 I was just diet controlled. I've recently had my 3 month check up from going onto Trulicity and I've already lost 6kg and my Hba1C has gone from 75 to 57!! in 3 months, luckily from what I can tell no side effects (unless I just haven't noticed).
No doubt this wont be the end of my diabetic journey and no doubt there will be twists and turns along the way but I'm happy with how things are progressing now.
I just wanted to introduce myself to you all and to say Hi.
