Newcastle diet starting Monday, done it once who gonna join me on my journey??

Day 9. Weight loss is now 4.4kg. Only 0.1 down from yesterday - but still down. Fasting blood was 5.4 (average of 6.1 over 7 days - including some after meal readings). New BMI is now 25.2. Slightly disappointed because if weight had continued to fall at about 0.3kg a day, I might have reached the new landmark of a 25 BMI today - but there is always tomorrow to look forward to. However, these stats are not those you would expect of a T2 out of control. Think I'll talk to the nurse again and see if I can try comming off or at least reducing the meds. I'm sure we have all had these conversations - but her position is that we cant tell is it is the meds or the diet that is yielding the positive results. I say - only one way to find out!

Hi Steve, if things have improved since you started the diet then the chances are that it is the diet unless you were eating things you shouldn't have or eating too much. Keep up the good work and prove that you are right!

Thanks for the encouragement. And you are quite right - I am a recovering carboholic - and probably need to consider this is my status for the rest of my life. I am seeing the world differently now. I even found myself telling the young WH Smith assistant off for offering me chocolate at the check out. Wouldn't have been so bad - except it was the check out at a hospital based WH Smith!

I remember many years ago when I was collecting blood from a very young diabetic girl (about 4 years old I think) and she was very distressed. A very kind hospital cleaner rushed off and came back with a bar of chocolate and gave it to her and we had to take it away. Luckily it was before the days of political corrctness and we weren't forced to make an issue of it but had to then tell all staff that they mustn't do that.

So 4 weeks in and lost 14 kilos which is about 30lbs but I know the weight loss will stop as I have reached the lowest weight I have ever seen myself on since I started weighing about 12 13 years ago. I still got 4 more weeks I am sure I will not loose 14 more kilos but if I can round it up to 20 I would be pleased.

I have trousers till 30 waist not below that and I feel by the end of it all I might need 28. Even with jackets I normally have small and medium. But yes might need a new one this time around.

I saw a GP/ Neurologist yesterday. I've now lost 53 ½ lbs from my worst weight (about a year ago) I exercise almost every day either 14-15 mile bike ride / weights in the gym / hill sprints on my bike. I am in the top 1% per this doctor for exercising as a T2D patient and my GP was suggesting insulin & we've not had any A1C done in 8 months!

So I've made my mind up to lose another 10lbs in the next month or so with being sensible on food intake & checking everything I eat. Its funny how a cheese sauce sounds good but the milk in the sauce it is lactose and thus sugar! I've been eating Myntz! and discovered today that they too are playing games with words calling them "Sugar free" whereas in reality its got Sorbitol which is nasty as sugar anyways! What a nightmare world we live in..

The funny thing is with mentioning waists of jeans. I've three pairs of Levi's that are 554's from 20+years back. Their size is 34 waist & 36 inside leg. When I tried those jeans recently they were still showing me sporting a big muffin top. 53 ½ lbs weight loss not withstanding. So I am hoping I can take care of that muffin top and look good again soon and put my T2D into remission..

It could well be it is just taking some time for you to trim up this area, if this is where you carried most of your weight. It might just be stubborn, or moving slowly. Have you tried doing any exercises to specifically trim this area, like stomach curls or twisting exercises?

Conversely, your muffin top could really be excess skin, with modest, "normal" subcutaneous fat, which doesn't have a great appearance because the skin itself has lost some elasticity, due to your significant weight loss. It's very difficult to influence how that goes, moving forward. For some people who lose weight in their middle years or older, they never appear to lose that last bit, but to this lost elasticity, with the only way to be rid of it is to submit to drastic action - the knife!!

Whichever it is, I'm sure you look healthier having lost that significant amount of weight, so you may already be "looking good again", but you just don't recognise it. We women have a lifetime's experience of seeing imperfections and focusing on them. Sometimes we (OK, I) just get things out of proportion and can focus on a small thing that simply isn't apparent to those around us/me. Focus on enjoying the positives of the changes and progress you have made, rather than being frustrated by a job not yet completed.

Let's face it, life is an incomplete job.

@AndBreathe

Yup isn't life an incomplete job? Or what??!! I personally am not too concerned about muffin top, more, that where I've lost at least 4" off my waist I was hoping to be on the downhill side of T2D. I am sure I've got both visceral & subcutaneous fats going on but I'll keep chipping away at the weight loss per Professor Taylor's thoughts on PFT and see if I can't become the next Carlos Cervantes! As for how I look, I feel pretty good about fitting back into all my old suits and double breasted blazers. When wearing my old outfits I do now look good..

The funny thing is T2D never gives in. Yet that's what they said about Sir Steve Redgrave. He didn't give either, yet I do wish him all the best with his approach to the disease..

Day 10 - weight gain! Very disapointing. I put on 0.2 kg - while sticking to the 600 cals (+veg). Cant think of what I have done that was different from any other day on this program. Blood was up a bit too - 5.9.

I think that's one of the problems with weighing yourself every day. 0.2kg gain could be caused by any number of things. You'd probably be better off not weighing yourself until the end of the 8 weeks and concentrate on BG instead.
Is there a recommendation for weighing on the ND?

Hi Indy

Not that I know of. 0.2kg could be water retention - or it could be that I had been dehydrated prior to this. I'm disappointed but not concerned. I am looking mainly at T2 reversal - not weight. The point of a daily weigh in is to give myself encouragement - this is after all supposed to be 'rapid' - but on this occasion it seems to have backfired.

Thinking back I did have a period of about 3 hours yesterday when I didn't feel that great. Apart from one other time - I have been feeling better on the ND than on my usual diet. Not sluggish, lethargic or tired. But yesterday afternoon I was a bit light headed. Had a couple of glasses of water but it did not pass quickly. Went to bed. Feel ok this morning. But weight was up. So I wonder if it was connected?

Hi @Steve50

This is the biggest reason i dont weigh everyday, even if i could coz if you stand on top of your scale 10 times in 10 minutes you will get atleast 4 to 5 different readings, do it weekly i would say if possible. I know its hard specially when you have the scale in front of you allt he time. I am using a very expensive fitbit aria weighing scale of my friend but even that gives me different readings everytime i stand on it.
Reading of 5.9 is a little high specially coz we are not eating anything but then it could be due to a number of reasons and most importantly what were your readings before you started, with 4 weeks in I have only dropped about 1mmol but I started at mid 5's on fasting before i started ND and now i am still 4.5 to 5.1.
You are only day 10 if i am not wrong into the ND so dont worry it will come down, I stay in 4's all day but I only test 4 times in a day, I could be lower than 4's but I do not test a lot still coz ultimately my plan is to reverse or put the diabetes into remission if possible.
4 weeks in and I still cant believe I am hungry almost all the time, I miss yogurt most and my tea coz I am not having milk and i cant have black tea, hate it to my heart so wouldnt have that.
Its not easy to have the same old veggies made in a different way coz in the end they all taste the same almost always, but i keep telling myself its only a matter of 4 more weeks, but within myself I know how hard these 4 weeks have been and how hard the remaining 4 weeks will be, having to cancel all the social get togethers coz you cant eat a lot and then all friends asking about weight loss, I rather just tell them once than repeat myself twice. I have not told anyone of my diagnosis anyways.
As mentioned earlier in the post please dont forget to have oil, I take olive oil and thats a spoon full of calories.

Thanks Brettsza

One thing it did do was motivate me to go for a long walk. Just for interest, I weighed my self when I got home and dropped 0.5kg. I realise I will put this back on with a glass of water but it is encouraging to see the numbers.

I feel for you re taste. I am trying what I can to put flavour into food.

4 more weeks! must seem like a long time - but Christmas was 15 weeks ago - and my wallet is still recovering!

I am still waiting to start the ND. My DN asked for me to see a dieticion before I decide (I already have) because of my low BMI. I saw her last Wednesday and am still waiting to hear. If I have not heard by the end of next week I will start anyway as I have a foal due in July so I need to be eating and keep my strength up to manage Mum and Babe just in case I feel weak on the diet. Keep fingers crossed for a filly, much easier to manage than colts!

Please, no negative comments, Pipp, I really want to try and reverse my diabetes as I am so very limited in what I can eat without my BS going really high.

@Arab Horse

Its funny I was discussing ND with my GP/Neurologist on Monday. I've lost plenty of weight but because I've not had a meter I think my BG levels have been all over the place. My BMI is now sub 25 & his position is well its not working so why would a BMI of 22 /23/24 work? Yet I've just discovered that sugar has been sneaking into my diet something cronic and giving PN. He has increased my metformin & I've to see him back in 4-6 weeks with a new A1C & peptide test

It is challenging to say the least!

@Steve50

I weigh myself most days, before I drink my coffee or tea in the morning. My scales can have an error of up to 1 - 1½lbs I always accept the lowest weight I am seeing.

Hi

What makes you think sugar is still going into your system if you are lets say not having it.
A BG kit is a must and if you dont have it iI suggest you buy one as thats the best way to keep on top of your diabetes.
Why dont you share what you eat on the forum if you think you are having sugar without your knowledge and members here can help.
What are your bg numbers like if you have the kit.

Why aren't you testing? It's such vital information.

I understand Walmart do some modestly priced meters, and strips. Many people find they are able to test for a while, then ramp down the intensity of their testing, once they have a handle on what to expect from scenario/foods.
