Hi, i'm looking to give this diet a try to see what happens. Prob is i really cant stand the taste of slimfast & similar shakes. Can i substitute it with my own homemade drinks of similar calorific value & if not, any other suggestions please? Thank you x

I tried something similar eating eggs and bacon once per day with double cream in coffee.
See this thread

Its a triple whammy... fewer than 800 calories per day (Newcastle Diet)
Only eat once per day (Intermittent fasting OMAD) thus avoid multiple insulin triggers
Ultra low carb high fat almost keto (in my view the best diet for Type 2's anyway)

edit to add this is ketogenic really..

That's an interesting concept but i dont like milk/ cream in coffee/ tea either. Wondering if i could have (supposedly) cholesterol reducing yogurt drink & cup of black coffee for breakfast instead ? Then veg soup for lunch & veg salad for dinner?? To do bacon & eggs once a day diet could maybe be a w/end treat for a change if i get fed up? x

I tried low carb/ high fat diet while ago & it was very successful with weight loss but GP wasn't happy as my cholesterol was 4.4 so he wanted to put me on statins but i refused.! He discouraged me from diet & i gained some weight again which has raised blood sugars so increased my metformin. Curious to see if i can reverse my type 2 by rapid weight loss. If i do diet, lose weight & it doesnt help then i have my answer x

Have a look at the "8 week blood sugar diet" book, it details how to do a Newcastle like diet with real food.

So you tried a way of eating that helped you loose weight and probably lowered your HbA1c and your doctor didn't like it? Time for a new GP perhaps?

My GP claims to be specialised in Diabetes aswell yet i prefer to go to practice nurse as i don't feel confident in his ability as he struggles to make a decision! I tend to just manage my Diabetes myself for now & find the DCUK forum fab but wondered if i should go see specialist at hospital although he was on leave to sort out his alcoholism & a colleague doesnt think he's very good either!

Personally I would have carried on what you were doing beforehand getting good weight loss and HbA1c and ignored the doctor. 4.4 Is a meaningless number in terms of cardiac health in my opinion.

That's what i was thinking of doing as my blood sugars were normal as i lost 4 stone in 6 months! I've regained almost 2 stone & my sugars are rising. I did discuss this diet with him years ago as it was in its infancy but he dismissed it as rubbish! I just wondered if i did it if it'd work for my but my stumbling block is the shakes as i've never had a sweet tooth & to me they are too sweet to be palpable!

We should remember that Health Care Professionals can only advise patients, they cannot demand that a patient take a particular course of treatment or dietary regime etc. This applies to the majority of conditions with few exceptions e.g the mental health conditions that result in a 'section' or in the few cases whereby parents of acutely ill children disagree with the treatment offered.

A run of the mill GP has very little expertise in nutrition because the training at med school just isn't long enough which makes little sense when you consider that every inch of the body is dependant on the metabolism.

Yeah i understand that as i'm a healthcare professional also! That's why i try & avoid my GP as i'm not confident in his ability to manage my diabetes. I'm no diabetes expert either & find DCUK a wealth of knowledge in educating myself on my condition as best to learn from those that also live with the condition!
