Newcastle diet

Hi all this is my first post - diagnosed December 2012 with BG reading 18 and put straight on Metformin 1700mg per day and 60mg gliclazide. After reading the forum and members' experiences with the Newcastle Diet decided to give it a try. I have been on it now for 2 weeks, Optifast shakes x 3 per day with 240g veg, weight started at 99kg, lost 4 kg in first week but only 2 this week. Came off all meds when I started and am really disappointed with the BG readings. Most members who have done the diet have been getting real reductions on their readings but mine have ranged between 7 and 8. Has anyone else experienced a slower start like this and does anyone know why after being so strict the weight loss has halved in week 2 and the BG levels not changed significantly?

Thanks

Kez

I wouldn't worry just yet. It depends how much weight you have to lose. Are you drinking enough water?

You don't sound overweight for your height so you ought to explore the possibility that you are type 1.5 which means the drugs you're on won't help bring your blood glucose levels come down no matter how few carbs you eat (that's good practice carb counting) you need that skill whichever diabetes you have.
Ask to see a consultant endocrinologist
Best wishes

Hi, I'm 6'2" and am 89.5kg. My BMI is 26, I want to be 25, but the care team said I don't need to lose any weight and be too skinny. I feel just about right and healthy and exercise has increased my muscle mass, so can't complain really. I lost 2 and half stone in abt 4 mths and maintained this weight so am quite happy as long as I'm active. If it's good enough for my care team, I'm happy. However, I see my ultra strict consultant tomorrow. He'll be surprised as I last saw him in abt september. I'll knock his socks off! All my readings are the lowest on record! Yay. We'll see what Mr. Slavedriver has to say. He's yet to compliment me so far and gave me a right bollocking last time. I'll learn 'im :D lol!

I always thought the Newcastle diet was a large fish-supper, mushy pays and a bottle of Newcy Brown Ale! Lol. :). (No offence to our North East friends intended)

Sounds like the sort of Newcastle diet I used to be on which got me into trouble in the first place!! Will read up on type 1.5 as don't know anything about it but getting very disheartened with the diet as was hoping for quicker reduction in BG levels
