hello everyone, this is my first post , i am 67, been type 2 for 10 years and really in denial.my younger brother died last year from related diabetic problems and I don't want to go down that road.
I started the Newcastle diet last Saturday, because I want to see if I can get my blood sugars under control and lose 5 st  may be, the tablets were not working ,however today blood sugar's down to 4.8 pre meal ,been to the gym and took 2 Repaglinide 1mg tablets, with my milk shake at lunch, now going to have home made soup with 1 tablet. hoping in two hours to be about 5mmols any tips would be very welcome.

Keep a close eye on your bs.
Repaglinide, on a low calorie diet, especially a low carb/low calorie, then exercise, and there a real possibility of going hypo. It's preferred to check your meds out with your doctor before going on the Newcastle diet, and seeing if they should be stopped for the duration.
If not, you need to check before driving back from the gym, (if you do drive)

hi to all interested in the Newcastle diet,I started on the 31st oct weight 15st 8.8lb bg levels 10mmols /14mmols and today 13th nov weight now 14st 12.6lb bg levels 4.5mmols/8mmols so have stopped taking repaglinide in case I go hypo.
will keep check on bgs.

(thanks for the tip to be carefull from douglas 22)
not hungry but not missing any meals/shakes.
family not very supportive they put pitsa, cooked chicken and fresh bread in the pantry, let them eat it   :yawn:lol

Started on slimfast today but looking at it it contains high carbs and sugar and my BG 3 hours on are 11+ which is higher than normal for me at this time, which i guess is to be expected. Should i just carry on? Or is a teadon not to do it?

sorry to see your bg getting high have you tried the Cambridge diet there is not so much sugar in it,Avidlite is good too.

Look at Slim and Save diet, that is low carb. It has a good range, shakes, bars and low carb meals

Atkins shakes are low carb but have no added vitamins. I wouldn't have Slimfast. Much too high in carbs.

the very low calorie meals such as Cambridge and slim and save, are expensive, but its only for a short time and no other food shopping is required, thats what I have told myself. BUT I do wonder if a fully skimmed milk drink , a vitamin and mineral tablet and a fiber jel, might do the job as well.

been to the gym today now 14st 9.8lb :D :D still on the Cambridge and no carbs. salad and chicken meal. no tablets, run out of test strips so can not say what bgs are,but feel good in myself and sleeping better.

That's a stone off in less than 3 weeks? Well done. Glad you are feeling good. Keep us updated with results.

I spoke to the diabetic nurse at the gp surgery today, explaining that I had stopped the tablets but needed more test strips, she was very helpful and really interested in how things are going, she has arranged for a blood test at the start of the new year when I will have completed the 12 week course, hopefully I can carry on do it with Christmas in between.

WEll done. I think it's worth the effort. How are you feeling in yourself?

hi Cara,I am feeling so much better, even my eyes seem to be improving.
been to the gym this morning now 14 st.9.4oz.
I am going to hospital tomorrow for a pelvic floor repair, hopefully it wont stop me from carrying on with the diet.

It's not advised to do any large amount of gym work on the newcastle diet. If you're only on 800 calories a day, there's not much left to burn off at the gym.
My trainer wasn't happy for me to be on 800 to 1200 calories, so I did try to go on 1200 calorie days, or at least eat just before I went.

I've been on the Newcastle diet for 3 weeks now and lost a stone. But I don't use slimfast I find I can make 200 calorie meals with salads, chicken and fish. Typical day is 1.5 weetabix with semi-skimmed milk, salad with tuna or ham for lunch and tinned potatoes with chicken or fish and veg such as cauliflower, cabbage, runner beans or broccoli. I also have cottage cheese with my salad. To help me keep track I'm a member of Weight Loss Resources online and it's great. I have found it quite easy to stick to this routine. I'm going to Diabetes UK day on Saturday and I'll check if it's OK to eat like this rather than having Slimfast, which I hate. I don't see why not because I measure everything carefully in grams on an electronic scale and there is no sugar in it whereas there is in Slimfast and I think they used that for the diet just because it's easy to measure.

Hi everyone, im back from Pilgrim Hospital, feeling a bit delicate, but they have been great to me. even the consultant put high protein drinks on the prescription and encouraged me to carry on with the diet. the exercises I was taught at the gym payed of and I was able to get up and move with ease.my blood sugars remained between 5 and 7mmols, and I stuck to simple chicken and salad for meals. I have to say they were very fresh and well presented.
many, many thanks to all at Pilgrim Hospital.

feeling weak today, i think it might be because its difficult to go to do number2 .any tips?????????? help.
bs 2 hours after breakfast=7.3mmols.

Hi
