Hello,
My name is Sam. I have recently been diagnosed with type 1 diabetic. I am here in diabetes forum to learn more about the condition and the ways to deal with it.

Hi Sam and welcome to the forum. I am Type 2 so you need to await advise from the many Type 1's on here but please be assured that they are a friendly and very informative bunch!

Welcome @unclesam01 , glad to have you around as a member of our exclusive club.

This is a good place for learning about the condition and there's a huge amount of experience amongst members who have been living with T1 for many years.

Any questions - ask away! The forum is a bit quiet at the moment, there will probably be a few around later.

Welcome. You may have read about diabetes being a dreaded disease in the past. As someone who has been on insulin for 51 years i am here to tell you that with care you have a long life ahead of you. In fact my specialist tells all new type 1's ( TIDs) to make sure they plan well for normal age retirement - the outlook is that good !
Please read the various posts and info on site about diet and hypos. Hypos ( hypoglycaemia - low glucose in the blood ) are enemy number one. Recognising them. being prepared to combat them and working out ways to prevent them are important lessons. Our brain needs glucose for energy so if the level if glucose in the blood gets low, adrenaline is triggered to release and adrenaline influences the liver to release stored glucose to combat the low sugar level. Because insulin injections may push blood sugars lower than normal extra glucose is needed that is where jelly beans or other forms of sugar come in.
Adrenaline causes racing heart, tremour ( shakes), sweating etc. if bllod sugars get liw enough for long enough brain function suffers - confusion, difficulty doing things, numbness, emoional upset etc. Hypos are potentially dangerous within minutes, high blood sugars only in a day or years.
