AndyDragon Great Job !!!!!!!!!

Just keep tract of things, without the meds the control is more up to you now.

Keep it up !!!!!!!!

That's all excellent!

Seeing you started at 78 and were on bydureon, dapflaglozin and 2000mg of metformin makes me feel like I got off lightly, was there a reason they put you on the first two? I started at 81 on diagnosis and was just put on 1000mg of Metformin, statins and blood pressure. then dropped the statins (my choice) a couple of months later and halved the blood pressure dosage.

So... When I was diagnosed way back when (February 2007, I remember it was a diagnosis on my birthday) I was immediately put on Metformin and sent to the diabetic specialist at the hospital. I remember my doctor phoning me and saying to get to the surgery immediately and that he would see me immediately regardless of his appoinments so I must have been high! I remember within the space of a week suddenly losing a couple of belt sizes in weight and being chained to the sink, so I always had elevated bloods (I guess prediabetes) but they flipped, and hard and fast. I was also extremely bad tempered, but I not that I realised, I was told after the fact by people who knew me

I had various tests that were inconclusive (maybe the type 1 tests?)

I changed quite quickly to slow release as I did have tummy issues on normal

The Metformin on its own didn't work to lower my bloods enough so there was a new drug at the time called, erm, byetta which was a daily injection and I was put on that. It's a long time ago, so I don't know why I was put on both so quickly. Because that plus Metformin controlled my bloods I was classified as type 2 and kept on those. I had that all the time except for a small period in Wales where the Dr pulled me off byetta (I suspect due to cost) And put back on when my bloods raised and I came back to England, luckily as I'd already had it there wasn't any fight with the bean counters! moving to the weekly injection when it came through.

Over time my Metformin dose was increased to the full 2000 and earlier this year when my bloods were 78, I had daplaflaglozin added to try and bring levels down and avoid insulin

I then started to diet and lower my carbs and that has led to drastic weight loss and my hba1c dropping to the level it is now. Due to that I have had my drugs removed in reverse order, that was my push with doctor support

The dapa isn't a drug I liked, the side effects weren't fun, but the other drugs were okay for me but not having them seems a good idea

Not sure if I will drop to zero, to be honest not that worried about the Metformin as I don't have issues

Looking at my medical record, it's increased over time, lowest prior to now was 41 in 2013 (it doesn't have prior to 2012 so no idea how bad it was at diagnosis unfortunately) since then slow but sure increase... Nurse says progression, insulin etc... Really it was me eating badly (sweet tooth) and not knowing the carb issue. Took me a long time but I know better, I'm lucky though, the drugs kept me in the levels that ideally minimised harm so ingot off very lightly with some background retinopathy. Hopefully even that can be reversed. But it shows, it is never too late!

Well done Andy. I got diagnosed 2 years ago with Hba1c at 72. Latest results last week was 36, which I’m very pleased with. On 2 x500mg metformin. Would like to know how much of reduction are the meds and how much has been effort. Has anyone given up Metformin? What was process and what level were you at when you came off them?

On that level you could I suggest speak to your doctor about coming off the metformin. If my next hba1c remains at similar levels to now (38) I am coming off them with dr support so can’t see why you couldn’t if you wanted to

keeping everything else the same as I believe metformin is actually very small change, I’m a few days in and my fasting levels remain the same on half, not sure on its half life though

I believe they have other benefits though, including some appetite suppression so not so worried if I stay on them
