Hi all. I was diag type 2 2 years ago exactly. My levels have been ok just diet (6.8) Over last couple of weeks i have had diabetes symptoms all over again (thirst - weeing)

Had test at docs yesterday and they phoned me to say test showed up at 22.9 from blood test. I have not done anything different and have been losing weight from being good i thought!

I have started metformin, 500mg 1 a day for 1 week, 2 a day for next week, then 3 a day after that.

One of my questions is should i still drive? anything else to watch for?

Kind Regards, Paul.

Agreed, also have you been ill? Even a comparatively mild infection can do a number on your BG. Also have you recently taken any other medication? Steroids are notorious for this.

hi my diet could be better but i have cut back on my sweets and chocolate i still have sugar in my tea cant drink it without any my levels have dropped but some days they are still quite high how is the driving going

Its torture when you are diagnosed and have to give things up, but the alternatives are in reality likely to be worse than the hardship of giving things up -in my opinion at least.
Sorry if I sound harsh (not meaning to, honest) but sugar in tea is what I would use to treat a hypo because pure and simple sugar is likely to be the fastest thing to hit your blood in terms of raising sugars. As a Type 2 I dont know if your residual insulin would make a difference to your tolerance of this but i cant see that it would.

Most type 2's i come across on forums manage their carbohydrate intake very carefully either by cutting right back and reducing what they used to eat.,Others are more strict and limit most visible carbohydrates (bread, pasta, rice, chapattis, floury stuff, pastries etc). The standard advice from GP's/health profs is to eat lost of carbs but cut down on sweets and chocolate. Sound enough advice re sweets and choc but you might find that a slice of white bread for example is nearly as bad as having some chocolate! Advice about testing is paramount -its the only way to find out what effects you.

Loads of type 1's also limit/reduce carbohydrates - myself included.

There are lots of posts on the forum, including hana's recent carb 101 which will help flesh this out for you. Try it and see, if you can, it WILL make a difference. With a bg of 23 there is room for improvement and the only way is down! :) .

Good luck

L
