Hello every one,

Just joined the forum after finding it. Brilliant site.

Had been feeling off colour since christmas, feeling very tired, and a great thirst all the time, it was not picked up until I had my yearly check up for my cholesterol, with the level came back as 4.0, but fasting glucose at 8.6. HbA1c levels 7.0%.
Was diagnosed two weeks ago, and given slow release metformin 1x500 once a day for first week and increased to twice a day second week. The side effects have been unbearable after day two of taking them, but gp said to bear with it! worst is the stomach cramps and what feels like morning sickness. Have not got an appointment with diabetic nurse yet. Not sure what diet should be following. Not drinking a much as was before as I go into my third week

Being sent for a liver ultrasound scan next week as I have been on Simvastatin since 2006.(20mg at present).

Any advice would be grateful as not due back to gp until week after next.

Thank you.

Hi Tiamai, and welcome!

Someone will be along soon to give you our excellent 'info for newbies'; meanwhile, try to reduce your intake of carbohydrates a bit (bread, potatoes, pasta, rice etc, anything with flour or sugar). It's carbohydrates that turn into glucose in your body and push your blood sugars up.

I was introduced to Metformin in the same way that you are, and had terrible wind and the runs at first, but settled on to them very quickly. I have no trouble now. Some people on here advise taking them with food - ie, in the middle of your meal, and that might help settle your innards.

Those answers are a bit simplistic, but I hope they help for now. Meanwhile, have a good read around on here and on the main site; you'll find lots of good information.

It's normal to feel a bit upset and confused when first dignosed, but don't let it get to you. Lots of us on here are living quite happily, with good control over our diabetes. No reason why you shouldn't too!

Hi again!

I see my friend Daisy1 has given you the basic info on your other thread. You're among friends now - don't be afraid to ask questions - we were all newbies once, and we're here to help.

Hello Viviennem,

Thank you for the advise, I do not eat alot of white bread, mainly brown, wholemeal or multigrain will have to check out the carbs/sugar value (I have two slices of toast every morning and I take sandwiches to work evey day). As for potatoes my downfall is roasted and I limited myself to three small ones, otherwise I eat them only once a week. rice and pasta I can eat in very small amounts and again only once a week. Have started a food diary on advice of gp until I see diabetic nurse.

The site has given me so much infomation, and all that have posted back to me have been very helpful and friendly. I felt left in the dark after first being diagnosed, but now can see light at the end of the tunnel via the forum.

Thank you again

Regards

Tiamai.

Hi Tiamai, its great to have the support of everyone here inbetween your appointments isnt it, I dont know what I would have done without the forum when I was first diagnosed. It can be so confusing and scary. Gradually over time we slowly adapt and adjust . Anna.x :)

Hi

As you may have spotted on other threads if your Metformin problems don't calm down do ask your GP for the SR (Slow Release) version. It costs a bit more so GPs don't generally prescribe it at first
