Newly Diagnosed and Getting Bad Advice (I think)

Hi,
Diagnosed T2 end of February 2011, given booklet, and prescription for urine testing strips, I asked about a meter and/or test strips but the doc just smiled and said the urine strips were what I needed.
With in two days I could not get an indication, further research revealed that urine strips do not indicate until 10.0mmol/L, not much good to check if readings are under 8.5mmol/L!
I bought my own meter and test strips, but resolved to negotiate for a prescription.
In the end I was given a Microdot+ meter and prescription for test strips, the prescription has been repeated once.
I've had my eyes checked and am waiting the result of another blood test.
I had to push to get the eye tests and am still waiting for the DESMOND course.
Seems like I will have to fight every step of the way, how are other people managing?
I've lost about 17+Kg so far, and am on a diet and exercise treatment, the doc wanted to put me on pills, but I refused until i'd given the diet and exercise a try, the right move I believe.
Currently my normal pre meal level is 4.4 - 6.0mmol/L and post meal (2hrs) 4.7 - 7.0mmol/L, although I've just discovered scotch egg is no good for me, had a couple of 8.0mmol/Ls over last two days!!

Hi djj and welcome to the forum :) Well done on persuading them to give you some test strips - something that is often very difficult but they are essential to control your diabetes properly. Earlier on in this thread is some basic information from the Forum Monitors. The dietary advice should help you to stabilise your levels. For ease of reference here is the link to this information:

Ask as many questions you like and someone will always be there to help.

All diabetics in the UK are entitled to a free retinopaphy screening once a year assuming you are in the UK you should not have to 'push' for what is your right. Again I am assuming that entitled means the same as 'right'.

You should also have your feet checked by the practice/diabetic nurse for signs of neuropathy once a year as part of a full check up, as well as regular HbA1c and kidney function tests the frequency of which depends on your level of control for a T2 between every three months and once a year.

As far as I am aware your doctor can not refuse these tests although test strips are of course discretionary.
