As I suspected your diet has lots of room for improvement.
Hi

Diet is good - cereals for breakfast, lunch invariably something fresh, dinners home made from scratch.

Since diagnosis - refined further - only wholewheat cereals (no sugar), all the usuals on food - wholewheat pasta, brown rice, no sugars outside fruit, never had sugar in tea/coffee... snacking on unsalted nuts, boiled eggs.

From a diet perspective beer was an issue - cut out almost completely.

In terms of c-peptide - yep, had the result this week - ‘normal’
Cereals of any type, pasta, rice and fruit all do damage. It doesn’t matter what colour they are they have the same amount of carbs and carbs are what a type 2 cannot deal with. I know that many drs and nurses tell you to eat them but quite frankly, they are wrong.

The nhs now endorse low carb eating but many professionals haven’t caught up with it. There is a low carb program associated with this site that the nhs can prescribe for example and learning modules for gp’s.

Fruit is a problem because of the way frustose is dealt with in the liver making insulin resistance worse and looking at your numbers I’d say you probably have a fair degree of insulin resistance.

The differences in your before and after readings are far more than 2mmol indicating you are unable to process the carbs. The new meds are giving you more insulin but more insulin leads to more resistance.

Take a look through some of these links below and see what you think. It’s the way most type 2 in here do it.

Can I suggest you take a good look at low carb high fat methods of eating (keto is just a version of this). It helps many of us lose significant amounts of weight, if desired, keep our numbers down and for some even eliminate medications and achieve remission and reduce or improve complications. Try clicking these links for more detailed explanations that are well worth readings

https://www.diabetes.co.uk/forum/blog/jokalsbeek.401801/ for info including low carb made simple

And https://www.diabetes.co.uk/forum/category/success-stories-and-testimonials.43/ to show it really works and for motivation

and https://www.diabetes.co.uk/forum/threads/what-have-you-eaten-today.75781/ for food ideas

also https://www.dietdoctor.com/ for more food ideas and general info of carb content of foods. Lots of other websites for recipes out there too. Just use the term low carb or keto with whatever you fancy.

Also it’s very important to be able to check for yourself what’s happening so you can make the necessary adjustments day to day and meal by meal rather than wait 3, 6 or even 12 months and then have no idea what had what effect. Getting a blood glucose meter is the only way to do this (no matter what contradictory advice you may have heard - it’s usually budget based rather than anything more scientific). Please ask if you want any guidance on this.

IMPORTANT FOR ANYONE ON MEDS CONSIDERING LOWERING CARBS: if you lower your carbs then any glucose lowering meds may need to be adjusted accordingly to make sure you aren’t taking more than your new diet requires. It can cause a hypo if you have more gliclazide or insulin etc (this is not relevant for metformin on its own) than your new carb intake requires. Keep a close eye on your numbers and do this with your dr’s knowledge. Please don’t be put off by an ill informed out dated rubbishing of low carb diets or being told you should eat carbs to match meds, it should be the other way around.

Many thanks for this; I will have a good look through. Much appreciated

For type 2.....Pretty much no potatoes or rice or starches. No pasta,no bread,no processed foods. No grains. No wheat. No added sugars.Cereals are loaded with processed carbs, not good.
As you start testing before meals and 2 hours after you will clearly see some foods are very bad for you.
Since you arent eating tons of carbs you will eat more protein and fats.Fats are GOOD.May be hard to wrap your head around that, but they are good.Low carb/high fat has been hugely effective for many type 2's in reducing glucose numbers and losing weight.Seems crazy, but its true.

Read, read and read some more and you can do well managing this diabetes.

This guy is helpful, weight and glucose both related to insulin, and how to deal with both.6 parts and well worth your time IMO,and many agree.
