Hi, some advice would be great it you have the time. my daughter was diagnosed 9 weeks ago as type 1 , and after a few rocky weeks things finally manged to settle down and we are magnaging with the odd tweak to keep her BG reasonalbe stable. she started to devolop a cold yesterday not to bad just a bit sneezy and very snotty the kind of thing i would not usually give a second thought but her post breakfast BG was 7.2 however she was 2.7 and feeling like rubbish only 40 mins later. however in the afternoon her post lunch reading was 5.7 she had a small snack about 10g carb because i was worried she would hypo again but her pre dinner was 18.7 !!!

Help, is this normal with illness and if so is they any way to manage it

thanks all

Just a quick question would your daughter's levels normally drop down in the afternoons?

Is your daughter having Multiple Daily Injections?

At 18, I would make sure that your daughter tries to keep her fluid intake up-ideally plain water to try and reduce the possibility of getting ketones.

Have you been given a ketone monitoring kit?

Are you able to adjust insulin to bring the high down safely?

hi thanks for the reply, yes she is on mutile injection nova rapid with meals and levimir at bed. I checked her urine and it was negative for ketones, being only nine weeks since diagnosis things are still very new and we are yet to reaaly discuss with her nurse how to bring down high levels, but we are meeting with her dietician in a couple of weeks to discuss carb counting and i think that should cover some of it

What I've found helps massively is to go by 10g carbs = 1 unit of novorapid. I'm on levemir, too. I do 15 units of levemir in a morning and then the same at night and have a 1 unit of novo to 10g carbs ratio and it balances me great. I've been diagnosed 5 years.

I cant eat full size meal portions or more than 2 meals daily am far better with little 2 meals [snack size] followed by lite bite supper 9pm then bedtime. Please can anyone point me in simple format examples n direction please. [am in a totally new world as a new starter to insulin] Anna.
