You know @MikeTurin, I've just been reading about LADA and I think you're right. This hasn't been mentioned once in my 11 years though. Perhaps the Docs thought they might confuse me  *sigh*

You could do worse than ask for a print out of the tests you had. They will tell you which tests they were and what the results were. You may get some answers from that. You could also ask which tests you had when originally diagnosed and what the results were. You seem to be working blind. Unless you ask for these, you won't get any further.

Good plan. I will discuss this with my doc next time I see them.
Fortunately, I'm in total control, which is the most important thing.

@Lord Midas It depends who the doctors were too. Most GPs have quite limited knowledge of diabetes, so if a GP diagnosed you as Type 2 then you later saw a specialist who said you were Type 1, that would sound like a misdiagnosis by the GP.

It would be interesting to find out your type now you've piqued our interest : D

I only saw my specialist yesterday, and it won't be months until I go back. But i'll certainly be asking when I do. ;)

I've updated my signature to clear up some doubt. Doubts which I now have. My Doctors have told me this is what happened, and I've just gone along with it. My assumption being that they know what they are talking about!!

That doesn't answer the question of what was the "real proper test" you had to find out what you were. Was it a cpeptide test? Was it a gad test?

I also don't think you signature does anything to clear up doubts. Type 2 diabetes doesn't "upgrade" to type 1. They are entirely separate conditions. Either you were misdiagnosed type 2 and were always type 1 or your an insulin dependent type 2. LADA is type 1. If you're going to self diagnose, you should probably understand what it is you're diagnosing yourself with.

Yes, @Lord Midas my pancreas doesn't work properly either... but I'm still type 2 and not type 1. With type 2 your pancreas can still get beta cell damage but it is due to insulin resistance in the body which causes your pancreas to overwork and wear out as opposed to the immune system attacking the pancreas as it does for type 1.

Thanks y'all. I don't actually know what the tests were. I gave the blood, they did their thing and I had a conversation.

My signature was a little fun. I gotta have the fun or the diabetes will drive me potty. I've been told I was a Type 1 by my specialist and now I'm learning that cannot happen. I learned yesterday there was LADA, which sounds more like what I am. The truth is, since joining the forums I've been told lots of information that has shaken the 'facts' I've been given by my specialist. I was never given the names of the tests, and only told the results (at least a year ago). Please don't be mad at me @catapillar :( all that I knew has suddenly been turned upside down.

I will certainly have the conversations about the specifics in time. But for now, I know what meds I use (Humalog/Lantus), how much to use, and how to keep myself under good control. Which I guess is the most important thing :)

I'm not mad at you. I just think youre rather confused.

Again, for clarity, LADA is type 1. It's just slow onset type 1.

LADA = latent autoimmune diabetes in adults.
Autoimmune diabetes = type 1

Like you say, whatever type you are the most important thing is that you are managing well.

FYI - my GAD tests never showed my diabetes was auto-immune... although the last c-peptide test I had back in 2010 showed I produce hardly any insulin.... still type 2 though. :)
