Type 1
Hi I am new here and sorry for pasting same post in two forms. Just wanted to hear from someone.

I am 29 and I was always thirsty and feeling hungry all the time. I ate a lot but was loosing weight. I saw doctor 3 weeks before . Fasting 325 and post fasting 455. Dr started insulin 18u morning and 12u night and got c-peptide tested . c-peptide was around 1.65 so dr suggested to have insulin only in night 6u also started metformin. Now fasting is around 115 and post fasting is around 170.

#How would I confirm if its type1 or type2 ?
#How long do you think I can live healthy if I follow whatever docotor says like take insluin on time, exercise.?

Hi OMdev, welcome to the forum. I've tagged @daisy1 who can provide you with some information.

In answer to your two questions:

#1 - You should talk to your endo on the topic. Do you know the units of your c-peptide test? In one set of units it is high, and the other set it is smack bang in the middle. A GAD test would confirm whether you have autoimmune antibodies, but I'd find out the units of your c-peptide first.

#2 - Diabetes is not a death sentence. There are many people on the forum who have managed it for a very long time and are still fit and healthy. For me that's 27 years.

Read around and get stuck in!

Hi Tim ,

Thanks for quick response. Yes c-peptide is exactly in the middle . I dont remember the exact unite(will tell you by tomorrow) but I remember the reference range was between .5 to 3.something

That's interesting. Was it a fasted test? C-Peptide is used as an allegory for insulin production, and a number like you are seeing shows that you are producing insulin. It doesn't really tell you much more.

C-Peptide doesn't really tell you what type you are unfortunately. You probably need to ask for a GAD antibody test to determine whether you have an autoimmune condition. That will provide a more positive response.

I am really happy to talk to you . Thanks a lot..It was tested few hours after breakfast. I would surely go for GAD test but I google about it and it says that GAD should be done before insulin therapy but I am taking insulin for 3 weeks now.

Heya, i'm sure your head is whirling around with lots of new information, it's alot to take in. Best thing is to try and learn as much as possible, knowledge is power and it will really help you with becoming an expert. Use your healthcare team as much as possible they are there to support you.

As Tim has said there is no reason why you can't have a long and healthy life as long as you take care of yourself and your condition, managing your diabetes will become second nature in time, just take good care of yourself and take things easy for a while ;)

You can live a normal life span if you get your diabetes under control, exercise, don't ever smoke (this is really terrible for diabetics), and don't stress yourself too much about it!
