Type 1
I was diagnosed with type 1 six months ago. For the past four months I've had difficulty sleeping and my hands and feet ache a lot. It's hard to say which is worse. I'm back and forth to the doctors and the last blood test showed a vitamin B12 deficiency. Aside from that the diabetes is under control. I've tried various treatments such as acupuncture and I've taken a course of Amitriptyline and now Zopiclone for the short term. They haven't provided a noticeable improvement. I wonder whether it's psychological. Has anyone else experienced this or is going through similar?

Hi @Loz_s :)

When you say your hands and feet hurt, can you give a little more detail? Is, for example, the soles of your feet? The joints? The muscles and ligaments?

As for the insomnia, if it's not the stress of being diagnosed (and that can go on for months, speaking from experience) or any outside event, could it be your blood sugar? Do you test it when you can't sleep? That's the first thing I do, and I've found a low sugar can make it harder to sleep. It doesn't have to be really low, even being in the 3s can mean I can't drop off.

Hi @Loz_s,

I can only speak from my own experience of this as I have been diagnosed for just under 2 month. I still suffer from bouts of insomnia, this does seem to be when my bloods are high/low and not in the "normal" range - I think I need to throw in there as @azure has mentioned the stress of being diagnosed. I had my first consultant visit today and think I expected miracles so I'm again I have been laid in bed well over hour n half trying to sleep with no avail haha. My feet for the first few weeks where aching so badly I went to see my local nurse who checked them over and pretty much said they where as healthy as she would expect and I could run a marathon if I so wished. This seemed to settle my anxiety a lot (along with forum members help). I do still feel slight aches still now in both hands and feet but this seems to be mostly due to higher blood levels such as after eating but it has defiantly improved from the burning/numbing feeling I originally got

How are your bloods at night and what dosage of zopiclone are you taking?

I take a similar drug every night to fall asleep, but find if I am over 6.5 mmol or after a heavy meal, the medication will have no effect.
