Hello everyone,

I’m a 27 year old former university basketball player that recently got diagnosed with T2. Last week my doctor told me after a blood test she was shocked at my results. She didn’t understand the results themselves so I’m going to an endocrinologist.

Last year October 2021, I was a 5.4 a1c while weighing 310 @ 6’4 formerly 240 the year before that. The pandemic caused me to form a bad habit of Uber eats & wine drinking. At the beginning of this year I started to exercise more since the gyms opened back up. I was especially going to the gym May-July 2022 because my baby shower was coming up, I wanted to look good in photos.

Then suddenly in October 2022, I started feeling sudden weird symptoms: thirst, waking up to pee 2-4 times a night, losing weight. I assumed the weight loss was from me and my pregnant wife eating super healthy since the pregnancy. I equated the others my bad drinking habits of vodka that I adopted these past 5 months. So I quit drinking in November. Suddenly, all my symptoms disappeared.

Weirdly enough I also got a terrible flu/Covid? at the beginning of November for 4 weeks nearly. This would be my second time getting it. I just assumed I had it since there was an outbreak at work.

My mom pushed me to get my blood tested to make sure everything is ok. About 9 days ago I got tested … my results came back at 12.4 A1C. My doctor was shocked completely. Said she never seen anything like this. My a1c doubled in a year despite me losing weight, playing sports again. She asked if I had any symptoms I told her no they all went away since I stopped drinking at the beginning of November.

My only gripe about this is that my drinking habit became too frequent. I’m disappointed in myself.

Any of you guys in a similar situation? Has anyone seen this before?

Your head must be in a spin, I feel for you.
Did your Dr do any other tests to confirm your diagnosis like the GAD antibody test and a C peptide test or even a second HbA1c to confirm that first one. It's not unknown for Dr's to get their diagnosis wrong, especially when it comes to which type of diabetes. The endocrinologist you have an appointment with should be able to confirm things for you.
Although it's generally thought that only old, overweight people get T2, it really is not the case, anyone can get T2. One of Britain's greatest Olympians, sir Stephen Redgrave was diagnosed with T2 at quite a young age, he went on to win 6 medals between 1992 and 2000. So if your Dr is right and you have T2, or any other type it's not the end of the world and shouldn't stop you doing anything.
Finally as you mentioned having Covid, I thought this post from a few days ago might be of interest to you

I also saw a blip after a second dose of Covid, but did not know about it until a year later, when all was back to normal. I have read that others have seen similar responses to Covid so can only recommend keeping to normal (that is low carb) eating and letting things settle back into the usual state.
It might help to get a glucose testing meter so you can check that your after meal levels are good - or so that you can tweak your menu to make them so, which with any luck will get you back into normal levels of Hba1c, or perhaps raise a flag if things are continuing to be higher.

My numbers almost doubled, but I haven't had covid, it was after the covid vaccination

That might be the culprit - after the AZ jab I had I was rather ill - my feet and legs were so swollen I got two appointments face to face with the GP in lockdown and they were even more concerned than I was. I have no idea what my blood glucose was like then - I had a raging fever and very sore throat too. I always seem to have severe reactions ot anything reactable to.
