Hiya everyone I am new to this and have no clue what I'm doing I'm new to this being newly diagnosed so I'm still adapting Just wanted to see what this forums like and get to know fellow diabetics even some maybe from my area and chat away really x

Thank you I never knew this was here and I've been trying to deal with this lifestyle change. Head work to say the least.

I guess the main thing on my mind right now is does it get any easier?

ya its mental at first but you ll get used to things.

Hi @Cha-Lloes and welcome, aye, it's all a lot to take in to start with and a huge learning curve, but you'll soon be an expert! Just take in as much information as you can in your own time. We've all been where you are now, just ask anything you're not sure of here, there's always someone to help.

Welcome to the forum :)

You've come to the right place for help, support and advice so well done for joining the forum.

It does take time to adapt to living with type 1 but it does get easier once you establish a routine, just stay focussed, remain positive and if you control your diabetes well there's no reason why you can't live a long and happy life. We have members on here who have lived with this condition 40, 50 & 60 years.

Hi I'm completely new to this too! Only got diagnosed with type 1 6 days ago, such a big shock and lifestyle change. Trying to eat as healthy as I can is so hard! Went into hospital with a blood sugar of 28 and now down to 11 readings ☺️ I'm hoping this gets easier too and to have more freedom with food

Thing I'm finding hard at the moment is when I was diagnosed I was off the chart somehow my body didn't shut down completely but now I've put on a new background insulin so something new to adjust to again but my readings are now effected and I get a good few days and then bang up they go, hope this sorts itself out. Thank you everyone glad I'm not alone as I don't know any other diabetic

I bet that was scary for you to be off the chart! Do you find it difficult not to snack between meals? I'm so bad for it nice to read and talk to others in the same boat

Hi there @Tamsinwrefo56 and @Cha-Lloes
welcome to the forum to you both :)

you have both come to the right place.
there are loads of great people here and the only silly questions are the ones that don't get asked.

even after 43 years of being a Type 1 D -- i still try to take things 1 day at a time and to focus on the here and now.

my early days advice is to test a lot , keep good records of the food you eat and keep in constant touch with your diabetes care team ( they get paid to help you so never think you are pestering them )

and keep posting here too :)

all the best !!

Hi! I do feel overwhelmed sometimes like I'm over my head but like you said one dat at a time! Did my reading and my bs is 20.1 feeling sleepy! How often would you say to test? At the moment I test 4 times a day, once before a meal and once before bed and nothing in between

Welcome. I was diagnosed a few weeks ago with T1. I test 6-8 times a day. Before meals and 2hrs post meal. I have been having a few hypos, so that requires even more testing and I drive a lot. so for ever 2 hrs in the car more blood sugars (my poor fingers ). I would of thought a minimum of 6 tests is needed for you at the moment? What did you diabetic nurse suggest?

great question !! think of it a bit like driving your car -- you have a speedometer that tells you how fast or slow you are going.

so with blood testing definitely in these early days you want to know what all the different kinds of food do to your levels
I normally test at least 8 times per day as follows

immediately on waking
before brekkie ( usually an hour or 2 later )
2 hours after eating
before lunch
2 hour after lunch
before dinner
2 hours after dinner
before bed

i also test immediately before getting behind the wheel of a car to drive

you may need to get more strips than you have been prescribed but we can worry about that if you run into any issues ( no point worrying before we need to :) )

For now she said to test before I eat, which is 3 meals a day ☺️ They are titrating my levemere at the moment slowly increasing my dose, at the moment it's 8 units. Not learnt to carb count so on a set dose of 2 units nova rapid. Maybe I need to test more after I eat!

My understanding and logic is, if you don't test 2hrs post meal how will you/they no how you are reacting to the carbs/insulin you are taking. It maybe they don't want to overload you at the moment.

That's a good comparison I think I should test more then! Thank you that helps knowing someone else's routine! I'm going to need more strips! For some reason on my prescription I have a box of 100 lancets but only 50 test strips! Need to sort that ☺️

Yeah that's true I need to figure what effects me! I think they don't want to load me with too much like you said though. Maybe after my doses are sorted and my blood sugar is down I'll concentrate more on what is best to eat, thanks for the info!

ok so for test strips -- there are a fair few threads on the forum where people discuss their ability or inability to get enough strips for their needs.
your starting point is your diabetic nurse and I would be looking for you to ask for 200 strips per month or even 250 as you want to feel safe knowing you can test often with out worrying you will run out before your next prescription is due.
if you are unsuccessful then come back here( or search the forum as well ) and loads of people will offer great help on what to say and written documents to have with you as back up.

all the best !!
