Newly diagnosed Type 2, HbA1c is 101, feeling really concerned.

Hi I was diagnosed today with type 2 diabetes. I was told that my HbA1c was 101 and I'm really concerned about it. I've got to wait three weeks to see the diabetic nurse and really don't know what I should be doing. The doctor prescribed Metformin, but other than that I feel totally lost and really down. Is it normal to feel like this at first? Thanks.
Mine was 102 at diagnosis! Low carb and portion control is the way to go.

Exercise for half an hour a day (ore more if you are able). Brisk walking is easily fit into your life. As everyone else says, buy yourself a monitor. Don't wait for the doctors to think about it - and if you do get one, see if you can persuade your GP to put the repeat test strips and lancets on prescription. Also get your GP to sign the form for your free prescriptions. It'll save you a fortune!

Hi Laity
You have made the best possible move by joining this forum! It's full of great advice, with really friendly, helpful members. I've been coming on here since Christmas, and gained far more knowledge about diabetes than in the last twenty years of living with the disease! I hope that all goes really well for you. Good luck!
