Hi everyone,

Just been diagnosed with type 2 and it looks like I will be put on medication to control, but will also do LCHF diet. I was wondering who I need to inform? Does my private health insurance need to know? Do I need to let my annual travel insurance company know? What about the DVLA? It is all very confusing!

Thanking you all in advance for any help!

From my understanding DVLA is only interested if your meds can cause hypos.

Personally I would tell insurers so they cannot wriggle out of claims by saying I hadn't informed them. Whether you actually need to depends on the small print, dig those policy schedules out!

They should not increase premiums for diabetics because it's technically a disability and they cannot discriminate against us.

I find that interesting and I'm sure you're right, but as we are vulnerable to hypos (unlike non Ds) then surely we are a greater risk? I'm talking about driving. I think I would have difficulty arguing my case with them if they tried to increase my premium.

Hi June. I did tell my insurer for the reasons I stated above but they treated it with indifference. I think the renewal is only a couple of months away so we'll see what happens.

I did exactly the same last October and they didn't want to know, unless I had restrictions imposed by the DVLA. My renewal is due in August, so like you, I'll wait and see what happens.

Hi. I would tell both your annual travel and car insurance companies as they will both record and list that you have diabetes. For Health insurance I don't think it is necessary. The DVLA only need to know for hypo inducing meds such as Gliclazide and insulin.
