Hello
I was diagnosed at the end of February with Type 2. Metformin 1000mg BD & I have started a low carb diet. I am a nurse and work nights. I get the most awful gastric disturbances & feel terrible during the nights I am at work. Any advice apart from the obvious, leave

The Metformin can cause stomach upsets if it is that you can ask the GP for the slow release version it's kinder on the tummy. Maybe though you have something called carb flu this can happen when you cut carbs to drastically or to much at once. Cutting carbs is best done slowly a little at a time so your digestion gets used to it

I had such a bad gastric reaction to metformin in both regular and slow release form that I stopped taking it and just relied on very low carb for my control. Seemed to work better for me.

Hi and welcome @Veronica44 trouble that I found with Metformin was that when I went low carb and did intermittent fasting it caused dreadful gastric upset for me. I had to give it up but luckily as the low carb and fasting had such a powerful effect on my bg numbers bringing hbaca1 down to 33 -despite having given up Metformin - so now it’s diet only management for me no more Metformin needed and diet only can work. My hbaca1 was 97 on diagnosis btw
What was your hbaca1 on diagnosis? It may be possible to agree with your dr or dn to give diet a chance first to see if it could get your bgs down? Once I stopped taking Metformin my stomach probs resolved immediately good luck and do discuss with dr or dn as gather can take a slow release version too.

Thanks for the advice. My Hba1c was 88. I’m ok unless I do the nights. Just wondering if the irregular eating patterns are part of the problem.
My next test not due till June.

Maybe you need to think carefully about what you eat at same time as you take your Metformin especially if you work irregular hours? Also maybe phone surgery ahead of your June date and ask for advice? Maybe the slow release version may work better ?
