Hello everyone,

So I spent last weekend in hospital with very low blood sugar levels (1.7 on being admitted.) I have a few other symptoms of diabetes e.g very thirsty, recurring bacterial infections in hot places, lethargy, losing weight rapidly (particularly when my blood glucose falls due to exercise) and on Saturday was effectively diagnosed with diabetes type 1 - though I'm having an appointment with a diabetic nurse next week to confirm this.

However I am a little puzzled as I only really seems to be getting hypos rather than hyperglycaemic levels - when fasting overnight my blood glucose hovers around 4. After dinner/a large meal my blood sugar can increase to around 9 but I've never measured it higher than that (I've only been measuring with a BG monitor for a few days). However I'm finding it hard to get my blood sugar up in the morning, even after breakfast it only increases to about 4.5 which obviously leaves me feeling lethargic/at risk of a hypo etc.

Has anyone experienced anything like this before? E.g problems with blood sugar regulation but only at the lower end (BG sub-5) and how did you deal with it?

Any advice would be very welcome! Thanks everyone in advance!

Nope not any medication at all as of yet - I have an appointment with a diabetic nurse next Monday!

Hi and thanks for the info. There are some rarer forms of diabetes that cause very large fluctuations in blood sugar. I've seen posts in the past on the subject but am not knowledgeble on that area. Hopefully someone else will be able to help. I think it's called Reactive Hypoglycemia?

Hi,
I have RH!
Yes we have wild fluctuating blood glucose levels, hyper, then hypo, because we 'react' to carbs and sugar. But only when not in control!
If you need more info then read my blog in the third link below.
On the forum, there's a thread on reactive hypoglycaemia, linked below. It shows just how misunderstood the condition is and also how it is easily misdiagnosed as diabetes, though you can have RH and diabetes.

I went to the doctors last week as I was feeling really tired and run down. A day later I got a call that my Hab1c is way to high it was at 58. I then was told to test my levels for a week and there were normally below 6.5, which is absolutely fine. I then went to another appointment a week later and they checked my blood again. I got my results today at my Hab1c ist gone down to 32, which is a huge different. They now think that I have diabetes type 1 in a honey moon period. Is this even possible? Would my results almost half within a week? I do feel a lot better this and I have slept better, but maybe they switched my results. I now have to another week to speak to a doctor...Has this happened to anyone?
