News - No Statin-Cancer Link

Jim.
Reassuring to hear although as with anything it is only one of many opinions about the subject.
As someone who got Cancer I have no idea if it was due to drugs, lifestyle, genes or what. Frankly I don't know and neither do I now care how or why it happened.

As for Statins........
Statins are one of the most effective known therapies for the prevention of heart attacks and strokes.

That is what I believe. My opinion. So I keep taking my Statin. I want to be around for a good while yet........ :D

All they need to do now is stop it's debilitating side affects. :|

Yes, some do have nasty side effects, however there are always alternatives available.

Not everybody get's them either.I once was on Simvastatin, nasty stuff but had it changed to Atorvastatin and not a single side effect at all.

Which one were you on that gave you a bad time ?

Thankfully not me cugila!
A colleague (who doesn't mention his condition at work so I'll say no more about that) suffered from awful weakness after being put on them. Not sure which one but it made me rather wary of them.
My doctor is still trying to coax me into taking Statins but every time he checks my cholesterol it's spot on so I always say there's no need.
Am I missing a trick?

Rushy.

Not sure really. I mean if it is all just anecdotal and what MIGHT happen how can you know if they are good for you or not.

I can only speak from my own experience and research about it and it is positive. So I am in the camp which says try it for a while and see, Neither I or my Endo, who changed me to Atorvastatin have a good word to say about simvastatin so I can see where people are coming from there. In fact my endo said the stuff cost pennies so why on earth would anybody precribe it !! A good bloke.

So, maybe you should try, especially as most Diabetic's are placed in the at risk category. It's not much use after a heart attacck or stroke saying, " I wish I had given them a whirl !" BTW, I don't work for a Pharma Co either as some seem to think. I just use some common sense and stick to what I think is best. If I am wrong, that is my own fault.

I would never tell anybody NOT to take them, in the same way as I wouldn't tell anybody, you MUST take them. We all have choices to make.

Hope that helps.

My DN who, I have little faith in, had been trying to persuade me to take statins for some time but as my cholesterol is 4.2, which is not too bad I resisted.
But then my doctor had a discussion and explained to me that there is evidence that statins have a secondary effect on diabetics, not just cholesterol lowering. But It seems to have some sort of protective effect against heart conditions also, it was enough to convince me to give them a go. I have been taking simvastatin for a few weeks now, with no major effects but I am getting a lot of nightimes leg cramps so next time I see the doc I am going to ask if I can try another type.

A doctor's views on statins, explains what they do and safety trials
