Oh dear , it's that time of year again , I have MAN FLU , ok , I have a cold , and my nose feels like it wants to fall off , whatever I try , it won't unblocked , tried beechams , lemsip etc, only thing that ever seems to help, and helps me to settle is night nurse , but is there an alternative to it ? I'm type 1 diabetic and it's packed full of sugar. Any advice greatly received.

I also have a cold at the moment, and today I paid a visit to the local pharmacy. I was told that given I'm diabetic, asthmatic and a regular co-codamol user, my only two options for decongestion were Olbas Oil or menthol crystals... and to let it ride! Unfortunately though, my glucose readings are in the high teens because of it.

At the first hint of a cold ie tickly throat, sneezing, I use a nasal spray containing 'Luffa' available from Health Food shops etc; I also take Koloba (Health Food shops) drops in hot water, along with Sure Cure, available by post from Abbots of Leigh, their own invention, and often by morning, the cold is gone. Sure Cure also helps with the resulting cough and phlegm if you don't catch it in time.
Koloba and Sure Cure are both available in 2 sizes, the small size will more than deal with one cold, and convince you you should have got the bigger size to see you through the winter.
Luffa is similar to one that Vick used to make, which gave me a headache, but they have some new ones out now as well.
None of them is particularly cheap, but much better than the alternative!
There is a sugar-free cough treatment, I think it's called Robitussin (sp?) available from large chemists.

* Night Nurse is available in capsules

They come in packs of 10 and are ideal for people with diabetes, unlike the super-sugary Night Nurse liquid. I get them in Boots but they're available in other chemists. Just ask at the pharmacy counter because they're usually kept behind there.

Alternatively ask your Pharmacist for something suitable for diabetics, personally I just take paracetamol.
