Night time hypo?

Diddly

Well-Known Member
Hi there,
So I had a few drinks last night, was checking my bloods regularly all was fine checked before bed was at 6 so had a couple of biscuits, went to bed. Woke up this morning felt like I had been hit by a bus, checked my bloods 12.6 now normally I am around the 6 mark. Could it be that I went hypo in my sleep and a liver dump brought me back so to speak? Haven't been able to go to work just feel awful.

Yes it is very likely. Alcohol can make it very hard to manage blood sugar. I am not going to tell you not to drink ever, but I had a similar rebound high of 19.4mmol with that 'hit by a bus' feeling, the morning after an alcohol-induced hypo. And I'm apparently not even diabetic. My close T1 friend had the same thing happen to him after he passed out drunk, but not everyone's liver is going to kick in and save them.

I have repeated warnings of such a scenario on about half a dozen recent threads on diabetes an alcohol. I hate to say I told you so :/

Note I am not saying this is going to happen to everyone that drinks or every time, because some people here insist they have never had a problem. Try eating more carbs before bed.

Just be careful. Ethanol is a drug to handle with caution.

I can definitely relate to the bus feeling, I haven't drank in months as I'm pregnant but if I hypo at night my bloods are higher in the morning and I have a pounding head, and it takes me hours to get motivated/feel like doing anything

Hi,
I used to and still at times experience what you're talking about. It certainly sounds like a liver dump, they're a nightmare. If you're a bit steaming and your bg is around the 6 mark I would suggest eating a small bag of chips
or something more substantial than a few biscuits. It may put your bg slighty too high, but you'll be clear of hypos.

You can't have a hypo being non-diabetic. Look up hangover. Better to eat something starchy beforehand to avoid the lows, with the blood glucose zap that follows drinking to absorb the alcohol and a small snack before bed. Better to be a bit high and crash than being low. Take it easy mate :)
