Night time stomach aches?

Hi all, for years I've suffered on and off from an interesting stomach issue. I'll go to bed and wake up at midnight with a stomach ache. I'll make several trips to the lavatory with severe pain and wind, a very strong thirst and feel freezing cold and shivering. Then it generally goes off at 3-4am and I get some sleep.

It happened last night but from 10pm to 1am and 2 weeks ago from 4am to 7am. I generally drink a couple of pints of water, sometimes take a windeze but it always lasts for that amount of time and goes away.

I have tested my BGs the last few times, always within range (last night it was 4.5 and then at 12:30am it was 7.8) and tested for ketones with a trace reading.

The episodes have reduced in frequency since getting medicated but may be getting closer together again.

Obviously I'll talk to the doc but wanted to see if anyone else had something similar? I've not been able to identify a cause, at first I thought it was onions in my food causing it but I've had episodes without. The time before last I thought it might have been cake related :) right now I think it only happens on days when I've had a lot of carbs.

There you could have your answer, but I think a trip to the GP is certainly needed to rule out anything else.

Good luck.

The more that I learn on this site and through general research, the more I think that too many carbs are particularly bad for us diabetics. I think you have found your correlation, the way to prove it is to low carb for a couple of weeks and see if it recurs during this time.

I personally would always recommend a low carb diet to anyone with T2D, it has made me feel amazing, completely different and extremely well.

But first of all, go see the Dr. to rule out anything medical.

Sounds awful and not something you would wish even on your worst enemy :( I would certainly speak with your gp and ask for a referral if they can't find the cause.

Hi,

Are you saying you went to bed with a level of 4.5 and by 12.30am it was 7? Am I reading that right?

If this is the case I would be suspicious of liver dumping. When my levels go low I get cold and often have to go to the toilet (TMI).

Have you tried having a small carby snack at bedtime? Does that make any difference?

Good luck in sorting it, sounds a right pain!

Just to clarify I'm not a low carb guy but I generally have 150 grams a day. Yesterday however I had about 230 so it is high for me.

Angie I wouldn't normally go to bed with my BG that low, I drop between 1 and 1.6 over night and am usually between 4 and 5 in the morning.
