Hi

Been to diabetic nurse at surgery today for my diabetic check...- well i knew it was going to be bad. This was confirmed yesterday when I received a letter from the surgery telling me to go and see a doctor. Thankfully this nurse is a really nice lady.

I asked her if I could have a copy of the results before going to the doctor and she said she ll write the important ones, which basically where:

HBA1C - 12.9% ( :( :( )
Cholesterol - 3.1mmol

She said kidneys look fine, but then she said there might be a problem with the liver and i might have to come off the cholesterol pills (not sure why or if this is serious)

BP was good - surprisingly so as i was a bag of nerves on edge of tears....120/70

Feet are good - pulse still there and felt all her poking

I feel it is a now or never moments. I know the doctor will urge me to go on insulin but i really dont want to. I feel i need to sort out my issues with food (mega comfort eater...with big binges..) and that would be more helpful

Nurse also did not flinch when I mentioned low carbing but she is still referring me to a dietician. And also she was very kind and added an extra 50 strips on my prescription.

I know there is not much anyone can say...this is completely my own doing....sometimes i wished i did not stop smoking but there you go....

feeling really :( today

There's no point in worrying about the past, just use it as a motivation to sort yourself out starting from now.

Why are you worried about insulin? If I were in your shoes I'd be biting their hands off to get on it...

Few reasons:

1) I live on my own...and I am terrified what could happen if i go low or something especially when i start off.

2) I really cant afford to put on weight when I have about 6 stones to lose

3) I dont want to get to a stage where i feel like i can eat what i want and then just compensate with insulin - hence i feel i need to tackle once and for all my relationship with food (i remember mum telling me about my great grandma who apparently was on insulin and she used to say...oh yeah i can have this cake, biscuit ...etc...i ll just take more insulin - history repeating itself??? )

4) i cant afford to not be able to drive

Hi claymic,

This may be the turning point for you to get diabetes under control.

Some good results there as well as a high HBA1c. I think you can do this and also think that you would benefit from talking to a psychologist about your issues with food. I would ask for a referral as this may be what you need, someone to confide in with your problems. It is easy for people to say eat less and exercise more but some weight issues are much deeper than that and are often the result of trauma or family issues. Sometimes until someone tries to help us unravel a situation we do not even know what has triggered a habit.

Statins sometimes cause an increase in liver enzymes and this is probably what has happened. I have to say that your team seem to have their eye on the ball with this aspect.

If insulin is an issue for you because of living alone and the possible impact on your driving then I would ask if you can be given time to see the psychologist and improve your diet.

You can turn this around with some help.

Take care.

CC.

claymic - a big, big hug for you x x
Look you have done extremely well to give up smoking, that cant have been easy, and it proves that you are a very strong person indeed.
I am sure that with cutting carbs and testing your bg you can manage to bring your bg levels down into shape. My personal highest Hb1ac was 10.8, so not that far behind yours, that was back in the bad old days before low carb eating.
I dont know if you should go on to insulin or not, but personally I would prefer insulin to Byetta and a whole lot of other drugs.
I have never had a serious weight problem, but a good friend of mine recently managed to lose 11st, she did this by low carbing and plenty of support from diet buddies.
This makes me think, there are so many members struggling with binge eating problems, wouild it not be possible to make this chat facility into some kind of support room for anyone struggling and needing help there and then, eg when the binge attack strikes, someone to talk to, to give support and encouragement and take your mind off bingeing?
Dont be upset now, at least now you know where you are at and you know that you can improve things, from reading your posts I have no doubt at all that you can do it.

All the best

Not all bad news then

Some days I really do think "in the end when I've lost enough weight I'll go on insulin" It would be so much easier and I'll be healthy and have trained myself to resist the "well I can eat that now" thoughts. Maybe that will turn out to be the case or maybe I'll never have the confidence in my willpower to take that step, who knows.

After reading the risks of being overweight on insulin and the pretty horrendous relationship between overweight Type 2's on insulin and dying young I really would give the diet stuff a few more months especially that now through this site you know how to achieve the results you want. You want to lose 6 stone well that's my target as well, 3 months into this I have 3.5 stone to go. It can be done, its not impossible, you gave up smoking you can do this as well.

Take care

The trouble is, that I feel like binge eating every time I read one of your recipes WJ. Maybe you should just cook for us all instead.

borofergie, you need to relocate, I will bring meals over to you
Thing is that you can binge on recipes I post....well.....within reason

A Swedish doctor (pro low carb) once told me that we should eat our fill at meal times, make sure there is plenty of fat, protein and vegetables, if you still feel like snacking before the next meal is due because you are hungry then it is due to not having eaten enough protein, however if its cravings (as opposed to hunger) that drive you to eat it means you have not consumed enough fat.

Week five of the VLC thing and I'm sure that's exactly true. No breakfast, half a roast chicken for lunch and a huge portion (or two) of Aubergine Lasagne for dinner (is that one of yours WJ? If so it's an improvement over real lasagne). I eat until I'm full, never eat any snacks, and still lose 2-3lbs a week.

Same with sugar free jelly, which is one of my staples, I used to knock back 2 or 3 in a go, until I started eating them with cream. Now a single jelly fills me up for hours.

Nope, cant take the credit for aubergine lasagne, my lasagne recipe has pasta sheets albeit low carb pasta sheets and its YUMMY or YUMMO as my non low carbing Aussie friend called it (staying with us at present)

Claymic, I understand exactly how you must be feeling, i am in exactly the same place and I am also needing to get my HBA1c down and avoid insulin. I have recently joined this site in the hope of finding comfort from it to stop the binge eating and I'm already encouraged by the other like minded voices on here. It seems to me you're among friends and this is where to find the support that could help. I also agree with Whitbyjet, sounds like a "binge eating problem" forum could be really useful, I for one could do with the help!
Good luck Claymic, it does sound like this could be the moment to turn it around.
