No carbs...What do you eat then?

by the way i forget to tell you about the bubblegum flavored topping :D

lol food porn! (slightly disappointed i didn't see any curry)

BUT im going to try my hardest not to cave in again because i was waking up in the night with symptoms of hyperglycemia and the pains in my stomach

i am going to the beach today though! in half an hour apparently...my willpower will be severely tested

OOOOOh thanks Ken that has wet my appetite  My mate has just invited me out for tea so we are going to TGI Friday so I can eat steak yum yum!!
Eurydice hope you survived the beach. Sorry to hear about the pains again. I must have been hyper with my reading last night but I must sleep through it as I felt fine and the high reading was a bit of a shock. It's still high today at 8 but i think the steak will sort it :)

This may sound bland and distasteful, but I really enjoy it - porridge is an everyday breakfast for me, it is sustaining and I don't have to feel hungry half way through the morning as happens with lesser breakfast cereals! With my porridge, made with low fat milk, I add some Flora Proactive and a small amount of fresh fruit, often blueberries, blackberries and sometimes strawberries! No sugar of course!

Lunch, varies according to my mood and where I am, at home I tend to eat toast (not white or wholemeal of course) with sardines in sunflower oil, or a similar fish twice a week, at work I take sandwiches, or eat soup with bread (checking soup for low sugar content) plus yoghurt/fruit. Dinner, (last night was really quite tasty, Bird's Eye have a really nice slightly expensive range of fish, called Simply, we had the Pollock which is cooked in a herbal sauce (over baked), with fresh Tagliatelle (not sure of spelling), carbonara sauce and steamed courgettes, place fish and courgettes on place of pasta, then add sauce - very tasty! Most dinners are usually chicken or fish with vegetables (and for me the following have been ok to date, although not for everyone as not low carb and some cannot eat carbs), pasta or rice and vegetables. Occasionally we have sausages and pure low fat meat beefburgers, always baked and not fried, but another steadfast food is the Quorn range, I eat them in place of meat (my husband also enjoys them), southern fried burgers, the mince I use in shepherd's pies (minus the shepherd LOL), and spag bog, also they have many other interesting varieties in their range. Desserts, limited really I am afraid, Hartley's sugar free Jelly, Irish Low fat and no added sugar fruit yoghurts, 1 per cent low fat natural Greek Yoghurt, with option of some added fresh fruit. Oh, and do not tell anyone, but last night I had a Wall's dark chocolate Magnum, yes I know I shouldn't, but that is a once in a lblue moon treat only.

Not very exciting menu, but really not that bad.

As explained it is not for those on low carb diet, and yes I know this is the low carb forum, but not all the diet mentioned is high carb, I just menioned the foods I have been eating and have (to date) worked for me! Not given up at all, but as someone on this site pointed out to me, not everyone has to eat low carbs, I am awaiting my test results tomorrow and then make a further decision, not sure where I am with the carbs at the moment, when first diagnosed I was told by my Diabetic nurse and from various other sources that pasta, rice etc were good to eat, as I loved both I thought that this was not so bad after all, and set off in that dietary direction, my next and following blood readings were much improved, so seemed to work. But this is my first 6 month test gap, the others were 3 months, and is the telling one! So back to you after results, and believe me I am really quite worried having found this particular post :!: , if purely cutting out sugar and fat has not worked, then I will be on the low carb kick, and believe me I will need lots of support, I have always been fairly slim, and pasta and rice fan (not much on potatos) so got away with it! Giving them up will be tough, but needs must :(

Hi HpprKM.

I am sorry.
That was not a criticism of your diet, it was an observation. :?

The title of the post is NO CARBS - WHAT DO YOU EAT THEN ? I looked at it thinking it was going to be a good days menu and realised very quickly it was nothing of the sort !
I got told off the other day by one of the mods for posting in a T1 area - never did like boundaries. So I do see where you are coming from !

I looked at your profile : Quote - just been looking at low carb diet and trying to get my head around it!

That is why I posted the comment I did. If I was a newbie and read all that in the Low Carb forum I would be more confused than ever. It may work for you, but in no way is it an ideal thing for a prospective low carber to read - unless they already know what not to eat.

When I first came on here I followed a Diet pretty much the same as yours. I soon realised that this Diet was slowly killing me. So much so that in 2004 I ended up with a major heart op. After that they gave me the same diet to follow ?? Mad or what ???

Joining this forum was a wake up call for me. I am not a low carb purist. I devised a Low GI/Low Carb/Low Fat/Low Salt/Low Sugar Diet plan which is varied and Nutritious. It works very well for me and together with Meds have lost 2 stone in 2 months. I have never felt better in my life. I am getting my life back.

I hope you will come back and ask as much as you like. There is always an answer from someone.
I hope you find YOUR way soon - it will improve YOUR life.

Ken. :D

No problem, I can see where you are coming from and I maybe did post in wrong place, but I have been considering the low carb option since discovering it, in an earlier post i mentioned that I was shocked to find the post, as I thought that I was following a good diet! Knowing that I have my new tests coming up I am keeping this post in mind for future reference (should I need it), as I am a diet only diabetic at this time and wishing to keep it that way as long as poss! Sorry for confusion, but at least not eating some of the stuff mentioned on this site, which quite frankly I do find alarming

If you do ever go down the Low/Reduced Carb route. Be prepared to be targeted and abused by the few who have no idea what they are talking about and just read things out of the Star or other such rags.

Ken. :D

As a diet only your carb eating might be absolutely fine...if so I will be so jealous as I am a carb fiend
If they are raised slightly then lo carb may be an option to try, as many have said to me there is no 'one size fits all' with this illness so at the beginning it is a bit of trial and error. There are a few as Ken says who kick off about lo carb, but from personal experience lo carbing has greatly brought my numbers down. My pancreas doesn't seem to tolerate carbs in huge portions at all but I don't cut them out of my diet I just reduce. For example I had a nice salad the other day with a healthy wholemeal pitta and my BS went from 5.2 to 8 which I consider a bit of a jump so I will probably just have half a pitta in future...it sucks but it's life.

Samcogle,

Thanks for your reassuring message. I do not eat large portions of anything, but if my figures are up tomorrow I will take your recommendation and cut down even further to see how that works. Yet to do my own testing, message with tester states should seek GP advice first, so will do so tomorrow! Also back with results tomorrow - wish me luck!

That's right, you seek his advice. Then come back here and we will tell you what you should be doing !!!

Thanks for the reply HpprKM, your menu seems very realistic for me at the moment because i see youre still having a piece of bread or bit of pasta here and there, instead of pretty much cutting out all carbs so that's what im trying to do, just reduce the carbs :) and i like porridge too but i put a sweetener in it, never margarine though, sounds a bit weird (no offence).

oh by the way

i've been eating a piece of 85% dark chocolate pretty much every day and had apple crumble with cream the other day, and a chocolate trifle today...so erm, my blue moon's are pretty regular >.< i need to stop it.

Basic.

That's where you are totally wrong, Nothing could be further from the truth. My menu is more varied now than when I was on the 'Healthy' Diet. I eat all sorts of Fruit/Veg/Meat/Cheeses/Lo-carb Bread/Nuts etc etc. You should try it. It works well for me. however, each to their own.
Ken. :D

Good luck HpprKM...and let me know how you get on :)
Have to agree with Ken, my diet has never been so varied and i have quite a taste for nuts now and also seeds which I used to think were bird food
Going to attempt a curry from scratch tonight and see what happens :D
