Non invasive glucose moniting?

Hi all! New to this forum, and hope this is the correct place to post this question!

My mother has had type 2 diabetes for the last 20 years, and recently we have been looking into non invasive ways to monitor glucose levels. Came across the Glucowatch and Glucoband but the companies either have gone bust, didnt work or havent brought the product out yet.

So wanted to ask if there was anything on the market that monitors glucose levels without the need to prick the finger each time ie on a watch that doesnt require blood??

And on a side note, does anyone know of an insulin syringe or pump that records the last does you give yourself? As mum does it so often she sometimes forgets what she has given herself so it would be useful to have one that told you what the last dose was. I know you can write it all down but that doesnt always happen!

Any help would be much appreciated!

Cheers,
Tim

Hi curly,

Sorry I cannot answer your queries but am bumping your post up in the hope that it will be noticed by someone who can help.

If I remember correctly, the glucowatch and glucoband were to warn of hypo's not as a glucose meter... Dectecting when the skin starts to sweat durning a hypo so often mislead when one was just hot and sweaty... You still had to do the BG test

There was last year a Isreali company (I think) that was going through the process of licencing a non-invasive device that clipped onto the ear... Not hearld anymore since..

Every insulin pump will at least log the last 50 bolus's dose, time and date...

There was a digital insulin pen that gave a digital read out of dose being inject and also gave the time and amount of the last dose, but it had many problems so was discontinued...

Apart from suggesting writting them down, the only other thing I can suggest is getting a Ultrasmart meter (lifescan) as this meter contains an electronic log book, which you can enter all your details, insulin dose ect which would enable to retrive info put in... You can download all the data to software via a cable, which cost around £11 with p+p, the software is free to download off lifescan website, which also contains links to where to purchase the cable...

Hi, it would be rare in the UK for a type 2 to get a pump but they are great for recording dosage as a lot of people forget if they have to use insulin multiple times every day! What kind of insulin does your Mum use? The meter suggested by Jopar is a good one and if you ask your DN you may be able to get a freebie from a meter rep, but that is just a maybe as I realise that doesn't happen at every hospital.....

All the best,

Deb

oooh, that watch looks good!

have you seen the panic room with jodie foster? her daughter is played by kristen stewart and she has diabetes and has a watch that does the same thing. obviously not real life but i've always wondered since seeing it again the other month!

Thanks for all the replies! Mum is in fact type 1, not type 2! For some reason i always get the two mixed up!

It has given me a lot to look into, think I will get her to get the Ultrasmart meter as it looks pretty good!

Oh awesome! :D I can't wait for those to come out!, my favourite is the Glucon watch.

With constant montioring maybe I can finally work out what causes my random BG spikes, near impossible to control atm :(.

Hmmm, any guesses as to when the NHS would be giving them out??
Or how much it's likely to be?

Hi Curly87.

Last year I managed to purchase one of these insulin pens off somewhere on the internet (sorry I can't remember where), but now I'm not sure if the company makes them anymore. Its the Lilly HumaPen Memoir. The pen features a screen showing date, time and dosage details for the current and past 16 injections. I don't use the pen anymore, the battery has ran out and is irreplaceable, though with further research it might be possible to get a replacement pen.

Here's a link to the diabetes.co.uk article http://www.diabetes.co.uk/diabetic-products/pens/eli-lilly-humapen.html

And here's a link to the Lilly user guide http://www.lilly.co.uk/Nitro/objects/pdf/Lilly User Guide Pharmacy1.pdf

Yippee, I'll have a Gluconwatch too thanks!! My fingers are getting worn out, roll on 2011.
Wonder how much they'll cost though or will we be able to get them on prescription?? They'll b great for kids too, and cute designs with their favourite characters on ,etc would be a winner.
