Prediabetes Not been diagnosed yet but think I may have diabetes

Hi all

I am a 45 year old male and I have been overweight all of my life.

In recent months I have had symptoms which appear to point towards Diabetes. I have an appointment on Tuesday to see my doctor when I will hopefully get an answer.

I am just wondering - as I do not understand diabetes to be honest - what should I be eating and drinking? Am I ok to drink alcohol this weekend? I am worried as in the last week I have had a couple of turns when I have had uncontrollable shivering for around half an hour and I believe this is one of the symptoms of diabetes......as I say....I know very little about the illness as until now I have had no reason to do so.

Thanks

Tony

Welcome,
I've tagged @daisy1 to give you the newcomers welcome information.
Read the great information and then come back, if you need questions answered.

After your visit to the doctor, he will give you certain information.
You will probably have some blood tests and get a further appointment a few weeks later.

Having a drink this weekend won't really do much more harm, but once you are following a treatment then drinking especially beer and grain alcohol is not recommended.
These drinks will raise your blood glucose levels.

Which you don't want!

Thanks for that.....my wife is away and is worried I am going to go into a coma or something.....especially as I have had a couple of shivering attacks.....personally, I am putting that down to flu.....although I HAVE been like this on and off for 2 weeks now.

There is no way I could even guess, what is wrong as there is so many symptoms that cross conditions and could be either or both.
Only blood tests could give you a diagnosis and how you treat which ever condition the blood tests show you may or not have, will be so important for your future health.
I was overweight and getting worse, but in over two years, I have gone from just under seventeen stone to my recent weight which is hovering around twelve stone.
I'm hoping that on my next specialist visit to be around eleven and a half.

It was my condition that was gaining my weight and not my diet.

And if I can do it, I'm sure with a little help from this forum, it's possible!

Doctor did a quick test......Glucose in blood at 16.4 but full blood tests sent off....ready Friday.

Should I be expecting to be told I am diabetic at my appointment tomorrow?

Unfortunately, I believe so.

But with the right treatment you can control the condition.

If you haven't, have a read of the low carb forum.

@Tonymachaj Unfortunately it does sound that way, but only your GP can answer that. But honestly don't panic. It is better than you know than the high percentage of Diabetics in the population who go undiagnosed. 7 weeks ago I was in blissful ignorance that I was a Type 2. I regarded my diagnosis as a much needed kick up the ass. Read the HCLF forum posts, particularly the success stories.....and then decide that in 12 months time that's where you will be posting your story. Loads of good people on this forum who will patiently answer your questions. Good luck mate.

Yep, saw doctor today......110 something or other......so now on metformin and awaiting appointment to see nurse about diet etc.

Are these tablets safe does anyone know?

There are plenty of threads about metformin.
You will probably have an upset stomach because of it if you do change to slow release variant, they are better.

You must reduce your carbs, as well as all sugar.

Have a look and read about how to do this in the low carb forum.

There is a big debate about Metformin. I was offered it initially, but refused. Like you I was a bit concerned about the safety of the drug. From what I have read though, it is as safe as any drug can be. It can, it seems, help with weight loss and fatty liver. There are even studies that it can prevent cancer. I have read a lot about it and to be honest at my next Doctors appointment will be asking for it.

One word of caution. The NHS diet guidelines are in my opinion outdated. Continue to read the low carb pages on the forum. Low Carb High fat is, once again to stress in my opinion, the way to go.
