Hi mi have been taking the slow realease metformin and I am still getting serious diarrhoea 3 days now do I stop taking them,
What are the alternatives

When are you taking the Metformin? And are you cutting carbs too?

Hi yes I have been cutting carbs. I take the metformin with my breakfast and evening meal

How do you know about cutting the carbs? Last time.

I shouldn't really comment, as I was fortunate and was able to go to the full dose of Metformin virtually straight away without any complications.......but I would think 3 days is not long enough for your body to get fully used to the drug.

You asked about this on August 1st. Just exactly what have you done about it?

Have you had the diarrhoea for a month or was it ok then started 3 days ago?

I get it about once a week which was a lot better than the normal metformin so I thought I would leave it a while now this week it's got worse

Eating carbs can make bowel problems worse, so I suggest you keep them to an absolute minimum. This would also lower your BGs.

I suggest you see your doctor about the diarrhoea.

I had the same issue with "Bum Gravy" for a while. It will take a while for your body to get used to metformin & I did find that its worse when I have been out for a beer. The next day its almost like a tap. You should not stop taking them & speak with your Doctor as CatLadyNZ said.

I am on the slow release as well. I take my doses throughout the day not all in one go. It helps. It do have the odd day where I have an upset tum but not as bad as the normal mediform. Please go and see your gp/nurse. Good luck. :-)

Some of us just don't tolerate it, end of. No matter what version, it goes straight through, I am one of those people. There are lots of alternatives but metformin is dirt cheap so the first line of defence....... get it changed to something else.

It's the first line choice because of its benefits and risks compared to the other drugs. The risks increase a lot once you move to the other drugs.

And it is dirt cheap...... it is actually proven to only lower BGs by a very small amount but it has a lot of benefits IF you can tolerate it aside from BG lowering. However too many people are left to suffer the side effects in silence and if it doesn't work for you, speak up!! High BG levels have side effects...... better to get decent control.

When I first went onto insulin injections, my doctor took me off Metformin but recently a Diabetes Specialist put me back on them and said I should never been taken off them!
I was put on 4 Metdormin XR each evening, BUT these have reacted badly with me and I suffer what I can only describe as acute exhaustion all the time. I pulled myself off them 2 weeks ago and am improving.

I liked this post because of the first part, but just want to add that it's a good idea to discuss any medication changes with a doctor or nurse first.
