Hi mi have been taking the slow realease metformin and I am still getting serious diarrhoea 3 days now do I stop taking them,
What are the alternatives
It's the first line choice because of its benefits and risks compared to the other drugs. The risks increase a lot once you move to the other drugs. Some of us just don't tolerate it, end of. No matter what version, it goes straight through, I am one of those people. There are lots of alternatives but metformin is dirt cheap so the first line of defence....... get it changed to something else.

I liked this post because of the first part, but just want to add that it's a good idea to discuss any medication changes with a doctor or nurse first. When I first went onto insulin injections, my doctor took me off Metformin but recently a Diabetes Specialist put me back on them and said I should never been taken off them!
I was put on 4 Metdormin XR each evening, BUT these have reacted badly with me and I suffer what I can only describe as acute exhaustion all the time. I pulled myself off them 2 weeks ago and am improving.
