In the week going on Meterformin I had readings of mostly around 5.3 to 5.6 before eating and 6 and 6.7 with one day showing a high of 9.9. Now two weeks og 500mg and 3 days of 1000mg I have been checking my sugar levels and they are slightly lower in the morning 5.1 to 5.6 but 6.5 to 8.1.

I am really not sure what these readings mean,

Any of you highly knowledgeable people shed any light please. To me it seems the readings before I started taking the meds were no so bad?

Thanks if you can

Metformin at maximum dose of 2000 mg per day only reduces levels by 1 - 2 mmol, so if you are on one 500 mg tablet then your reduction is what is to be expected. Cutting carbs is the most effective way of reducing levels for a Type 2 as you are eliminating what makes your BS rise.

What were your levels before you started taking metformin or what was your hba1c?

Day 1 reading was 5.6 before breakfast and 6.3, in the afternoon.
Day 2 reading was 5.3 before breakfast and 6.7, just after 11pm
Day 3 I had a reading of 7 before breakfast and 9.9, two hours later
Day 4 Was 5.4 before a breakfast and 6.1, 2 hours later
Day 5 I was on 5.6 and 5.9 late at night

Hi glass ))Denise(( is absolutely correct, metformin is a great help but not a magic bullet and even the max dose will not drop your bg more than 1 or 2 points.

Keep taking the meds and keep tweaking your diet till you're happy with your bg levels.
