Diabetes
Am diabetic of two months. Am trying the low carb diet but not sure if I am doing things right. Seeing diabetic nurse on Thursday and I know she will not give me a meter so am wondering if it is really necessary and what sort to get. Food at the moment is scrambled egg for breakfast, lunch either tuna, ham or salmon with salad and dinner chicken, fish or pork chop with vegetables. I have been having half a slice of lidl protein bread with breakfast. I have been having almonds for snack and vogert with some raspberries. Have lost a stone and a bit in six weeks so surely am doing something right. It all seems a bit overwhelming still and really hope I will feel better soon. Am not taking tablets as a tried metformin and it was awful. Also have gastritis and small hiatus hernia so have to be a bit careful what I eat. I am 71 year old lady and considered myself fairly fit a couple of months ago. I just want to be able to enjoy life again. Anyone out there who can reassure me.

I can, by the sounds of what you are eating - all good. As to meters, if you buy a 'codefree' meter the strips are £6 for a pot of 50, very reasonable http://www.homehealth-uk.com/medical/blood_glucose_monitor_testing.htm. Hope the link works.[/QUOTE

Thank you

Well done of the weight loss. Your diet sounds quite good to me but without knowing your blood sugar levels it's difficult to know so that's why a lot of us like to test. Then we can see what a particular meal does to our levels. Do you know what your levels were when diagnosed?
I was very fortunate that I was given a meter as my levels were very high to begin with. I did manage to get them down with a similar diet to yours and my only exercise was walking. I'm a little younger than you but I started by aiming to walk for 30 mins a day and then built that up to now often managing 4 or 5 miles, slowly but this works for me.
The above post suggests a meter that is used by a lot of people on this forum as the strips are the cheapest.

My levels weren't very high 13.was the highest When I was diagnosed hopefully the nurse will tell me on Thursday what it is now. I do a fair bit of walking as well which I know is good

Hi welcome
Well done your diet is really good you are eating all the right foods and loosing weight so you are doing really well in getting your diabetes under control and all without medication. I am sure your BG levels will have come down by the time you see the nurse. Using a meter is optional not everyone feels they need or want to use one so that it is entirely up to you. I am sure you are soon going to feel better about the diabetes and not be so overwhelmed by it as you are doing so well

Yeah - I thought your low-carb diet looked really good. (It made me hungry! And very secure that eating that food wouldn't raise my BG much.) As a way of looking at having diabetes is seeing yourself as carbohydrate intolerant, and prone to insulin resistance - going low carb so early on after your diagnosis will surely bring that nasty (post-meal?) BG of 13 down. I think your 'Not Sure What to do' should be 'Doing really well' instead! (I only wish I had gone low carb so soon after my diagnosis.)

surely am doing something right
Welcome young lady (I'm 74) and you're doing everything right as far as I can see. Just keep it up. I know it's all very uncertain at the moment but all will become clear.
Yes. do get a meter and I'm sure you'll see how you're keeping your blood sugar levels down nicely.
Soon have you enjoying life again.

Welcome :) It sounds like you've made a very good start. I second walking as a great form of exercise :)

Let me tag @daisy1 for you as she has some welcome info.

Hi @Dwillams57 you say you are still waiting to feel better? It may be that you have too little fat in your diet and to lose over a stone in six weeks may be at bit too much. So you might try to add a bit more fat and see it makes you feel better.

Hi and welcome. That diet sounds great; just keep at it. Ref Metformin, if it should be advised to go back on it (unlikely) then do ask for the Slow Release (SR) version which is much kinder
