Thank you very much Lesley,
That's food for thought. My addisons was only picked up due to my constant low blood sugar. It was never high before. I had a period of highs just after diagnosis, but think that was due to illness.
I really hope (everything crossed!) this is not the start of another autoimmune disease.
What is GAD? How did you know you had insulin resistance? Is it ok for your fasting levels to be high, but your HbA1c to be normal?
Sorry for all the questions and thanks again for your help x x x
Hi Jennifer
GAD antibodies are very often found in Type 1 or LADA but not always, i.e. you can have autoimmune diabetes but not necessarily have the GAD antibodies but more often than not, you would. They are also often found in relatives in people with Type 1 and in people with other autoimmune diseases, such as myself, but just because you have them doesn't necessarily mean you will end up Type 1/LADA. Or possibly in someone like myself with 2 other autoimmune conditions it could be extremely slow in develop - it really is a wait and see game.
With regard to the Insulin Resistance, I have a very good integrative GP and he tested me for it .. I had become addicted to processed carbs and put on a lot of weight. At last check I had reversed it but been slipping into some old habits lately so might have slipped back .. hope not! Assumng my Mum was Type 2 (she died about 18 months after diagnosis) then that is where I likely get the insulin resistance from. I also believe though that 2 relatives on her side of the family were diabetic but not sure which type. If Type 1 then perhaps that is where I've inherited my problems from.
The problem with the HBAlc is that it is just an average of all your blood sugar levels so could be made up of nice steady levels or real lows and highs, as in yourself, so really your meter is a better measure. I think in pre-diabetes you are subject to those kind of swings before Type 2 sets in but not sure about Type 1. I read through some old emails from
@ShellyC23 and she said often her sugars would go low if she was due a dose of hydrocortisone.
How much hydrocortisone are you on per day and how is the dose divided? I used to have mine as an am and pm dose but most people find it beneficial to divide the doses throughout the day which more mimics the way a normal person's adrenal glands would behave. I am on 4mg tabs, 3 on waking, 2 midday and 1 mid afternoon. Just had dose increased as I've had a couple of viruses back to back which has left me with post viral fatigue.
Hope this helps ..... high fasting levels are not good. If I were you I would be carb conscious which you should be anyway if you are prediabetic and this would help preserve your beta cells. As you will know as an Addisonian it is extremely important to look after yourself and be vigilant with any signs of illness by increasing your meds accordingly.
Please don't be afraid to ask any questions - it's always good to meet another Addisonian as we are a rare breed!
