Now Even More Confused

At the start of this year I was identified as having higher than normal fasting blood glucose levels, over the next few months and with the help of much daily testing I started on a low carb diet and began to get things under control. Since December my FBG levels would vary between 110 and 130, dietary control has managed to keep them under 118 most of the time and my 1 and 2 hour postprandial numbers were actually starting to look very respectable.

Last month I left the hot climate where I live and went back to the UK for ten days, it was of course extremly cold but we survived. Now back home about three weeks and all of a sudden my high(ish) blood glucose numbers have become low numbers, fasting is never over 108 and postprandial numbers are often in the 80's or 90's. I'm now to a point where I am eating bananas and buscuit a couple of times a day to ward off the sensation of feeling hypo''ísh!

So, before I run off to see Dr Endo I wonder if anyone can fill in some of the blanks for me, is this a normal situation for a type 2 person, high and then low blood glucsoe levels, I always thought it was one or the other?

Let me phrase my question slightly differently:

I was regarded as having high blood glucose levels (two consecutive readings over 126) hence I went onto a very low carb diet and that was effective in getting the fasting and post prandial numbers under control, the fasting numbers still remained somewhat high (115 to 120) but no big deal.

Now, for no apparent reason, my fasting numbers have fallen to just over 100 and my post meal numbers are in the low 100's, almost normal levels. Even after eating carbs such as bread and potato's the numbers are still low.

I had always imagined that I was dealing with a high blood glucopse problem although it now appears to have switched to a low blood glucose problem (I do get hypo''ish in the evenings) and I wonder if this is unusual and/or if anyone else has experienced such a thing?

Thanks

And the answer comes from another web site where folks explain that this is not unusual, blood vessels expand in hot weather/climates and this results in lower BG levels and often causes hypo's in people who are otherwise hyperglycemic. There, so now you know and when you go on holiday to the sun, you need to be aware!

Hi Rob,

I live in Botswana where summer is **** hot and winter is bone chilling cold! My BG is totally different from season to season. In summer I get Hypo's and winter slightly higher than normal. However that being said I never forget to low carb as I am a type 2. I have found Cinnamon to be very helpful in Winter. I also use Apple Cider Vinegar due to its health benefits. I do not take meds as I have very good control of my diet. I cook daily with Cinnamon and am now below the 6 value both fasting and Post Prandial. Does not work for everyone but definitely worth a try. In summer I use a Apple for the hypo. Works well and is filling. Hope this helps?
