One of my favourite nuts is the pistachio, and I came across this statement while looking for suitable nuts to add to my salad's.

The kernels are often eaten whole, either fresh or roasted and salted, and are also used in ice cream and confections such as baklava. "Scientific evidence suggests but does not prove that eating 1.5 ounces per day of most nuts, such as pistachios, as part of a diet low in saturated fat and cholesterol may reduce the risk of heart disease".

Does this statement hold any water :?:

Hi SB,
I always sprinkle crushed walnuts on my salads. I also have 25g of brasil nuts in the afternoon as a snack.
Doesnt affect my BG's.
I am always wary of what is stated to increase or reduce heart disease as it all depends on what else you are doing and eating and ultimately whether the stated "fact" has any more integrity than any other stated facts of an opposing view.
Hence, I believe in the maxim "Eat to your meter" but I would also add "Eat to your meter and your blood test/profile results".

Regards Steve.

An interpretation of some research on pistachios and LDL from the NHS site.

I think this bit of the conclusion is important

It is important to keep in mind that pistachios are also often heavily salted and that this study carefully removed salt from the rest of the diet to counterbalance this. It is important not to eat too much salt, and anybody regularly eating nuts would need to take this into account to avoid negating any beneficial effect on cardiovascular disease risk factors by increasing blood pressure.

Apart from eating lots of brazils, macadamias, cashews .... I use round almonds as the basis for 'porridge' & 'bread' (minute muffins, q.v.) At 70, all my heart indicators are satisfactory. I don't eat my nuts salted.

I had a thorough screening as one in a research project last May.
