We are managing pleasantries today. He came home in a terrible mood last night, ate tea went out to play badminton, in late and had a hypo this morning at 1:40. Is this due to lantus being injected or chance? I prefer the first option but not going to ask him yet! Stay safe ;)

Oh dear....

A hypo at 1.40... it depends...

It could be the badminton activity or lantus or whether he saw he was high before bed and decided to also give a bolus quick acting jab. Or what time did he last inject a quick acting jab?

Oh my.... now really in a perfect world it needs him to understand (and really helpful if partner and parents understand too).

If he is injecting any basal i jections.. he needs to o some basal testing at some point to make sure he is doing the the correct amount. If it is, this will give him more flexibility for eating times and doing tjings without fear of hypo's and hypers.

Normally if using a bolus, quick acting insulin this is most active 90mins to 3 hours after the injection. If you are high or low during tgese tines after a jab of bolus then it is this that will normally be wrong.

It depends what went on behind the scences last. Night to be honest.

He needs to do jyst a couple days (initially) of testing and writing down..
has he got a record book he uses?
Just a couple days initially to really identify whats happening... and what needs to be done to help him have an easier life.

It may be that he would be better of using a mixed insulin, 2 injections a day but regular times of eating and regular amounts of carbs.. if that makes living easier for him it may be an option that has not been offered to him. Most people prefer the basal / bolys regime for flexibility but like all tjings, all options should be considered to give your son the best opportunity of living healthy and happy...
